You do not get permission from the Police to fly - they have no power to grant that permission.

It would be the CAA that extends that permission and you would know that if you held PfCo which you do not appear to.

In addition your flight puts you inside Newcastle CTR which extends from Surface to 10,500ft

Do not think that because a couple of bobbies say "Yeah, its alright mate" you are allowed to make the flight

I'm surprised they don't have more light on the iconic arch.
To be honest it's all a bit too dark but quite interesting if (like us!) you know the area.
It might be technically illegal but a few feet above the river close to the pilot is hardly dangerous..

If you're flying beyond line of sight and within 50 metres of structures/vehicles not under your control then yes.

These laws are arcane and not really relevant in this day and age but they still are laws. There are a LOT of people who want drones banned outright so to put evidence of your 'not very legal' flights on YouTube just gives more ammunition to the anti-drone lobby.

You may remember the YouTube user P2V+ Adventures who was fined for flying over city landmarks.

Just be careful dude. I had a few videos featured by a local online newspaper here last year and while the thousands of additional views were gratifying, it wasn't long before the drone police were on my case and then the CAA themselves with veiled warnings that my flight may be breaking their rules. The content wasn't even as saucy as your Tyne bridge video but in the face of these warnings I ended up taking the videos down.

Leave the comments off on your video and they won't be able to say things about it, a lot of the drone police people are way too critical and not exactly accurate on what they think is "illegal"

That's odd. Just picked through the CAA's air navigation order (an ordeal) and true enough, there's no mention whatsoever of night flying. I could've sworn it used to be there, although they're maybe inferring that with their blanket statement about being sure you can make the fight safely.

Yeah exactly ... I've argued this point before, he CAA doesnt mention flying at night at all, just the fact that you must maintain line of sight, and that you are confident that you can make the flight safely.

The US FAA website mentions that comercial drone operators have to ask for permission to fly at night but doesnt mention hobbyists ... But the UK it seems, it's legal

HAHAH i love all these hero's screaming ILLEGAL!!!! and waggling their fingers at every single drone video posted

Never flown a drone ... or even operated anything RC before .... but as soon as i get my Mavic ... ill be setting her in sports mode skipping any of this "calibration" or "battery charging" bs and ill be buzzing towers at the Airport within 20 minutes... Maverick style.

"TOWER THIS IS GHOST RIDER REQUESTING A FLYBY"

But while I'm waiting for my drone ... ill keep myself busy .... not watching tutorials.

I see you conveniently left out the 1st line "over or within 150 metres of any congested area"
As for night flying, you could argue that you can not see your aircraft and its surrounding area well enough to see and avoid any obstacles.
Back in the good old days of model aircraft flying, nobody flew at night so there was no need to specifically make any rules about it.
Luckily for us the recent update to the ANO did not restrict our hobby any further, but the more people who disregard the current regs, the more likely it will be for new restrictions to be added in the future.

We are quite lucky in the UK, avaiation is not as heavily regulated as it is in other parts of the world. As a glider pilot, light aircraft pilot and now drone pilot I would like to keep it that way.

The CAA is generally happy to let us get on with it within reason, so it has a drone code to guide us. Being familiar with it and being sensible about how we fly has got to be better that compulsory registration and restricted flying.  Which is a very real possibility. Just google dronesafe.uk for the guidance notes.

For information, night is the defined as the period of 30 mins after sunset, to 30 mins before sunrise. If you want to be really accurate it's when the sun is 12 degrees below the horizon!!
