Is it so or do i have a defective product. I used S5 and Iphone 7 plus. Both didn't work. Is this a standard procedure on all the DJI products ?

Yes, you need to connect to Internet and activates the product before you can use it.

I dont think the return policy covers using the item then returning it. If you want a better return policy you should order from Amazon or any other authorized sellers that have a satisfaction guarantee.
