I just recieved an email from a Swedish reseller claming that the Mavic is limited to go 500 meters in distance according to EU regulations.

Can anyone confirm this is the case?

There are 2 separate settings... The height is limited from 20M to 500M.  For horizontal distance, you can disable the limitations by entering 0..

I always thought, if you ignore the laws, that the range is only limited by the controller at 4 miles~

In the EU, drones can only fly 500meter - so all the drones have a limitation (set in the Dji factory) to 500 meters. ..

Not it is not limited to 500m distance, I assume the reseller is quoting from the guidelines which state that you must retain visual contact with the drone and this is normally said to be 500m maximum.
Yes the Mavic is limited to 500m in height from the take-off point.
You should get around 3 kilometre's  range in CE mode, but that would be against the regulations in most EU countries.

How do I know if my controller/system has CE classification of FCC? My reseller tells me the CE version has a lot weaker signal...

It has both CE and FCC modes, the gps in the Mavic decides which mode to use depending on its location.

Various countries and jurisdictions have different rules related to the use of drone technology. The Mavic Pro undoubtedly has the capability to exceed pretty much all of them, the responsibility lays with the operator, not unlike driving a vehicle. As an example, in Canada, drones are limited to 90 metres or 300' in elevation from the point of take off as well as line of sight. With the size of the Mavic, it is pretty easy to lose sight of it due to its small size, that limits the distance one can legally fly.  500 meters horizontal is a fair distance away.
Sadly, as more and more drones are sold, more abuses will occur and the regulation of drones will become tighter and tighter.

I took my Mavic today to the mountains and I know it can only fly 120m high but I presumed this would be from ground level and as I climbed the same height would be achieved.  Instead it nearly slammed into the side of the mountain and the gradient wasn't even that harsh.

I know there is terrain follow but that seems terrible and you have to stay fairly close to the floor?!

Anyone any ideas?  I guess landing and taking off would give you another 120m but don't fancy that miles away?

You can change the max height in the app, up to the 500m limit.
