‘Stok’ was a word for outlying pasture near water where there was good grazing and the cattle were kept during part of the year. Stokesby and its neighbour Herringby is listed in the Doomsday Book (1086) and had a population of 500

Found this video from the 1930s , at around 2:30 they get to Stokesby

Thanks for the word origin. Interesting archive. But sorry, unfortunately I couldn't watch more than 30 seconds of this. Gives me eye aches. ;-)
