Can anyone summarise which of these frequencys is best to use? Is it a case one is better nearer and the other for further flights?

It is more about your particular area. There are many that will tout their radio frequency knowledge and try to convince people that one is better than the other but in the end you need to test in your particular environment. Going over a sparsely populated area I was able to go over 3.8 miles away on 5.8 GHz using parabolic antennae boosters. Even then it was battery level that made me return to home. On 2.4 GHz I can't get anywhere near that distance. This is probably due to the number of 2.4 GHz devices in use versus 5.8 GHz devices. I would do some test runs at the same altitude using the different frequencies and see what you get for your particular situation.
