Hi Studiodp, I'm not from Malaysia (I'm from South Africa) I'll be visiting KL next month on vacation and wanted to find out if there are any security/public issues with flying drones? I've read up the regulations and they seem to be similar to the laws we have in my country. I'll by flying privately, and as far as I understand it, I don't need to have a license?

Currently you no need to have a pilot license to operate your drone in Malaysia. You only need to follow our rules and regulations implemented by our DCA (Similar to US's FAA).
As a tourists you no need to register with DCA Malaysia in order to shot aerial video unless you are doing commercially.

Can you confirm this? I had a friend whose P3 was turned back at the Causeway. The customs officials almost confiscated the drone. He was detained for questioning?

it's depends on your luck. there is no written regulation that you can not bring in drone to malaysia. all depends on custom officer.

I like your name and avatar Mike-the-cat, I am sure there is a reg of some sort, however as the op posted all is open to interpretation of the individual you are dealing with (agent, officer etc..)  I am not from Malaysia but have done businesses with and in the country on occasion.

I suggest all you mavic pro users to check your photos and video footage that you've taken and check whether there are any blurs or washed out effect.

We will be heading to Malaysia from next week on visiting some cities and islands. Can I fly my DJI Mavic without registration? Can I get problems at the airport security checks? I don't want my drone to get confiscated.

I am traveling through South-East-Asia at the moment and would like to buy a Mavic s in either Malaysia and Singapore - due to the relatively low price - at least in comparison to Europe. However, I am not sure how it works with warranty then. I heard that it is only valid in the country where the drone was bought. How long does it last in Malaysia and Singapor and where do I have to send the drone if it breaks? To the reseller I bought it from or to a centralized repair factory of DJI in Malaysia and Singapore, respectively.

You can fly your drone without registering. Security shouldn't be an issue as well. Just ensure you keep the battery separate and in your hand carry. I took my Phantom 3 from KL to Indonesia and didn't have an issue both ways.  

Anyone know where to buy stickers for the Phantom in Malaysia? Preferably KL.

As long as u fly your UAV in malaysia public u need to apply a drone permit from DCA (Department of Civil Aviation Malaysia), If you fly above 100ft or 33meter u need to have our JUPEM and OCSA approval letter. Doesn't matter is hobby or working.

My advise is launch your drone on roof and avoid the public. Ignore and fly!

Yup, you'll need to apply license only if your Drone weight more than 20kg. Else no license or permit needed unless you want to flight in restricted area like KLCC or Putrajaya.

You do not need a license to fly a drone less than 20kg.. but you still need a permit to fly.. please refer to the new DCA regulation (2016)

If the fly involved mapping (need to check this out), then you need an extra permit from JUPEM (Survey Department)..

Hi there, I have just bought my spark too. Not the flymore though... now I am thinking to buy the remote.. wanna ask what's the max distance you can get? Cause I see 2km is US FCC, non FCC is only 300m.... so little... I wanna find out what's the distance for Malaysia remote control... hopefully more than 300m...
