On the control box do you have to take the whole back off to put batteries in?

Assuming you're referring to the transmitter, and your transmitter has the left dial, it's a rechargeable battery so no.  If there is no left dial, there is a small door in the back you open to replace the batteries.  So no, you don't ever have to remove the whole back.
