On November 19 2016, the leading pesticide e-commerce platform Nong1Wang (www.16899.com) used the DJI AGRAS MG-1 for an aerial spray weeding experiment. By comparing the effect of the AGRAS MG-1 when used with different varieties of herbicides, it is possible to ascertain the most effective herbicides for aerial spray weeding and gauge the level of economic benefit without harming wheat or reaped crops. This experiment provides a scientific basis for wheat growers to control the weeds.

Experiment Materials and Spraying Method

1. Tested Herbicides
Nong1Wang's 85% MCPA-Na water soluble powder, and (Shi-Er-Long) 200g/l Fluroxypyr Emulsifiable Concentrate.

2. Spraying Method
Using the DJI AGRAS MG-1, 6000ml liquids per acre, Smart Operation Mode, flying speed 5m/s, height 1.5m, spray rate LED3, spray width 4.5m.

3. Aerial Spray Location and Area
The aerial spray experiment was conducted at Dayang Town, Qiaocheng District, Haozhou City, Anhui Province over an area of 4.94 acres.

4. Weeds Species
Annual broadleaf weeds such as cleavers, descurainia sophia and shepherd's purse, etc.

5. Spraying Time and Temperature
As spring weeds are normally stronger and more herbicide-resistant, increasing the herbicide dosage increases the cost and hazards to wheat and reaped crops. As a result, this experiment was conducted in winter with the wheat at the early tillering stage. The specific time of the experiment was at 11:00am on November 19 2016.

As temperature may have a direct impact on the spraying effects of weed killers, especially systemic conduction herbicides, it is critical to spray at the appropriate temperature. The experiment was conducted on a 15℃ cloudy day with a gentle breeze.

Survey

20 days after the drone spraying, the experimenters returned to the site to observe the effect of the spray weeding and compare the results with the non-sprayed fields as shown below:

Results Analysis

These photos show that after using Nong1Wang’s 85% MCPA-Na water soluble powder, and (Shi-Er-Long) 200g/l Fluroxypyr Emulsifiable Concentrate to kill weeds, annual broadleaf weeds (such as cleavers, descurainia sophia and shepherd's purse, etc.) became withered and the wheat grew well without any impact from the herbicides.

Conclusions

Based on comprehensive analysis of factors such as control effects and safety, herbicides for winter wheat can be sprayed with 85% of MCPA-Na water soluble powder, and (Shi-Er-Long) 200g/l Fluroxypyr Emulsifiable Concentrate using the AGRAS MG-1 to provide an even spray and effective weeding.

The two types of herbicides will not affect wheat growth and show good weeding effects without returning sprouts. This compound liquid mix and drone spraying method can be considered effective and is ready to be popularized.

Note:
1.   Due to inaccurate weather forecasts during the experiment, the experiment area was struck with sleet 48 hours after the spraying.
2.   During aerial drone sprayings, special attention must be paid to the dosage. Due to high concentrations of herbicide mixes sprayed by drones, areas should not be re-sprayed. If unfamiliar with spraying, experiment with 10kg of water to calculate proper spray speed and dosage.
3.   Smart Operation Mode is recommended for flying, even  for herbicide spraying.
