Hey guys,

I'm from Canada, (Toronto specifically), I go across the border a lot, for food, and hikes and stuff. I recently got into flying drones for photos of my darling wife and myself.

Question is, FAA regulations are much further ahead than Transport Canada (FAA equivalent).

As a Canadian do I or how do I register my drone with the FAA - I plan on flying it around on our hikes and take photos and etc?

Any help would be great, would like to avoid any trouble.

Use the FAA's web site to register; the cost is $5 (USD).

Not sure, but if you plan to fly in the US, I recommend get your FAA UAS certification and you have to spend $300 to $400 for classes.  I receive my cert a month ago with a week of study (granted I have been flying drones for over 15 years, but I am no genius).  I watched a few YouTube videos on sectional charts and airspace, and downloaded this nice Googleplay app call UAS107 (see below link) for around $4.  Pass the exam my first attempt with an 85%.  Now the exam is not an easy one by NO means, it took me almost the entire exam time to complete.  But I did pass and all I spent was $154 which included the exam fee.

Be responsible no matter where you fly and please follow all national and local laws.  Safe flying !

Make sure you register as mentioned above.

As long as you are not making money or other commercial use, there is no need to get the UAS certification and take the classes etc. You are operating under FAA part 107 (hobby only).

- Check Airmap for a view of airport zones and additional no fly zones (TFRs, National Parks, etc.)Select "Recreational" "Class B airspace" and all of the "Caution" areas. Not a bad idea to select the other airpsaces as well. They will only appear if they extend down to 0 AGL (ground level).

Just follow these rules:
- Fly below 400ft AGL (above ground terrain level)
- Keep it within sight
- Dont fly within 5 miles of airports without contacting the tower and gaining clearance.
- Dont fly within class B airspace (major airports have this)
- Never fly over groups of people
- Never fly over stadiums or sports events
- Never fly near emergency response efforts such as fires
- Never fly under the influence

Some extras not specifically listed by the FAA:
- Don't fly in national parks
- Check each location before you fly. Google the location or park name and "drone" or "rc aircraft".

Per our state (Mississippi) FAA drone department these are the resources they pointed me to.
1. FAA UAS Resources https://www.faa.gov/uas/resources/
2. Special Rule for Model Aircraft (Hobby ONLY) https://www.faa.gov/uas/media/model_aircraft_spec_rule.pdf
3. Part 107 Summary (Commercial use) https://www.faa.gov/uas/media/Part_107_Summary.pdf

Just so you don't have to sort through all the paperwork I'm going to copy and paste straight here:

the aircraft is flown strictly for hobby or recreational use;
the aircraft is operated in accordance with a community-based set
of safety guidelines and within the programming of a nationwide
community-based organization;
the aircraft is limited to not more than 55 pounds unless otherwise
certified through a design, construction, inspection, flight test, and operational safety program administered by a community-based organization;
the aircraft is operated in a manner that does not interfere with and gives way to any manned aircraft; and
when flown within 5 miles of an airport, the operator of the aircraft provides the airport operator and the airport air traffic control tower ... with prior notice of the operation....

For me it took a while to find information on #2, and the FAA guy was real serious about that point. He said when they conduct an investigation (if you are turned in) they always ask what community guidelines you follow. He told me if you cannot answer that question you automatically fail the investigation. That being said, he referred me here:

http://www.modelaircraft.org

This is an organization called Academy of Model Aeronautics. Their safety guidelines are accepted by the FAA. So basically if you are ever investigated you just tell them you follow the AMA guidelines... I personally did the membership so I could give them a member # but im not sure that it was necessary. I just wanted to cover my bases.

Their safety code is here http://www.modelaircraft.org/files/105.pdf

"I personally did the membership so I could give them a member # but im not sure that it was necessary. " I looked into this. In their FAQs they mention that you are NOT required to be a member. Just follow the guidelines.

Sweet! I'll probably forego the membership next year then!
