Critically Low Power. Aircraft Landing

So today doing a flight and get this when I hit 35% battery.  Zoom in for landing but even before I land my battery is back to green status landed with 22%.

Pay attention guys I was flying in cold weather.  The reason my flight log starts where it does is because I had bad video lag after I started the flight. Pre flight check was OK. However shutdown Go app and restarted it.  Now for some reason I didn't have wind at launch site but hit 50mph plus on the return home.  Smoking it. I was in GPS mode so even with full stick would not expect that sort of speed. Healthydrones only shows max wind from 8mph to 15mph.  Got a nice video to come.

Well it has not done a lot of flights and most of my flights I land with over 20% battery.

Maybe I should let it rest and listen to some nice music and make it feel better after all the hard work it's done.

Looks fairly windy at times, HealthyDrones may not have picked up on the strongest gusts because it needs a steady wind for a while to take a measurement.

Maybe it got scared by the height and was being cautious about how long it would take to get back down?
I'm not an expert on the P3 battery, but the voltages look OK don't they?  I don't see the temperature anywhere?

I have two batteries that like to auto-land early.  One lands at 27%.  There is no reason I can see for it to do this other than it's slightly swollen.  The other battery lands at 24%, but on that one, the percentage drops like a stone along with the mAh as it lands.  Last time I tested it from a height of about 10 feet, it only takes about 30 secs to drop down from 24% to 7%.  Needless to say, I don't make distance runs with either battery.

I'm used to P4 batteries, sounds like the P3 measures the % differently and is less accurate.   Only time the P4 batteries ever seem inaccurate is after they have self-discharged, so it is important to fill them to 100% before flying if they have self discharged.

My batteries are in good condition. No swelling or damage.  I think they are fine now was just tougher flying conditions today.  They have never been hot on any flights.  Probably because flying them up in the 10000 foot height range is a lot cooler

I just checked them and they are all good now.  They always get a few hours or more rest before a recharge.

My batteries were P2 and the main thing that guides the percentage estimate is the mAh reading (e.g. 5200 = 100%, 2600 = 50%).

yup My batteries also have that listed in healthy drones.  One of my batteries already has 50 flights on it. I've only had the P3S since 24 January.

You can use the Go App to read your battery status at anytime when you are connected to your drone.  It's in the settings area. For Healthy Drones you click on battery and there are several other areas you can check on several things.

OK.  I decided to let all of my batteries sit in my drone and drain them. It's a slow process mine took several hours.

Any benefits you may ask?  Well yes, Even though my prime use battery shows 94% life left I actually have an increase in capacity I can now store from previous charges.
Slight increase. I took a couple of easier flights today around 12 minutes and 4 minutes on the same battery landed with 31%.

Healthydrones has changed name so I had to re-login again.  Here's my latest trend on may prime flying battery.

53 flights on this battery and after the nice discharge have over 4500ma capacity and shows I have 24 minutes flight time available on the battery.
My lowest capacity before was 4300ma now 4500ma.  Maybe it's just a coincidence?

It's flying fine now.  That was just a hard flight I'm thinking.  Took it for a nice 1 mile distance and back then a short trip around my launch area.  All good. Thanks for your advice I will keen an eye on things.

Not really.  A lot of my flights I use max altitude to clear clouds etc. In the summer planning a hike to over 10500 ft launch site to do some droning in my mountains.  Have done many flights at over 10000 ft altitude using max height.  Much easier to let the drone fly up rather than me hiking up the mountains.

I don't have many locations where I can fly from that do not have steep mountain drops.

just an FYI, and perhaps it was covered.. but, i always put my batteries in my pants.. haha, yes, in my pants, before flying.. this way they are usually at 25-26C before I fly.. whether it's normal day or a cold day, i have found that warming them up before flight helps a lot with them not wanting to autoland early. I also tell the app to display voltage, this way I know that anytime the voltage drops into red, i have to be cautious....  it either means i am too hard on the controls, or there's wind... I did have the quad kick into autoland a few times before, when it was well over 30%, but it was always when it was either cold, or if i took off with a battery below 80% (not recommended), and ALWAYS when that happened, my voltage was in the red (that setting is in menu, batteries, advanced, I think)
Hope this helps some pple to be safer and avoid issues.

Thanks.  Next time I fly up in a cold area I will warm up the batteries from the car heater.  They are in the car anyways.  Now I have an Argtek Antenna Car kit I can also sit in the car and fly and keep warm myself.

For most of my video I was hovering which is also harder on the drone than actually have speed in flight.
Was in interesting experience anyway and one to remember. I do have my battery app running on my phone all the time.

Does it require a modification to the  RC controller or is it just plug in place of current antennae?

The Argtek just plugs in no modification such as drilling holes in the RC.  With the Car antenna you use the suction pad and the cables then run to the car, you take off your antenna's and put them on the extended
mount and simply screw the connected into the ports on the RC.

Is the area you live covered with cloud most of the time or do you deliberately seek out cloudy days to shoot?

Yes I choose cloudy days at time after the rains.  I have done some sunrises with no clouds as well which came out nice.  Later on in the summer I plan a sunrise from a high peak when no clouds are over the mountains but want to get a really clear non hazy day.  The last video I squeezed in when the rain had stopped and it was a morning around 8:30am and you could not see the sun peaking through at all.  Still I had fun as had not flown for around a week lol.

Isn't that why we fly.  I haven't flown for awhile due to work and bad weather.

My batteries have gone on a nice two week slow discharge. Charged them up for flights tomorrow.

I will look at their data again.  Not planning on pushing into strong winds and hovering for 15 minutes to shoot video's.

I have posted about this before but just to explain about the inaccuracies of going by displayed Voltages ...

When a LiPo is new and good condition - its internal resistance Ri is very low and it can deliver good power without excessive voltage drop.

Lets for argument sake say a LiPo has to give 10A to hover ... and with a good new battery we say the resulting voltage displayed is 4.1xV and dropping at a reasonably slow rate as capacity is used.  Flight time 20mins before you MUST land... showing about 3.5V

Now take an older battery and subject to the same regime ... its Ri is much higher (Ri increases every time a battery is used.. and never goes back) .... now we are drawing 10A and initial displays are maybe 4.00V but drops fast and flight time is noticeably shorter because of VOLTAGE DROP under load.

Once the AC lands though - the battery then shows reasonable capacity still left ... but its only usable in low power demand situations.

This is one of the reasons you you should not fly with partial charged packs ... you really do not know the Ri condition and whether the pack will be good enough even for that short hop.

Like many things - perception is 90% of the answer.

Human nature - we put air in the car tyres and we think car rides better ... we change oil in the engine and we swear engine runs sweeter ..

LiPo's do not physically recover anything by Deep Discharge. The chemistry is totally different to days of NiCd etc.
What you may have done is caused a better balance of cells and the total voltage now equates to a higher capacity ... but it will over time / few cycles return to former ..

Take the battery out of the drone.  Power it on and leave it overnight to drain.

It will drain and then shut off.  Let it cool down.  Then you can charge it up again.
