Firmware upgrade procedure of the DJI Inspire 1 seems to be confusing for many owners, especially if something goes wrong, so I have decided to share my experience while upgrading from 1.2.0.16 to 1.2.0.17 (please note the beeps during the process).

Thanks to all the owners that have described their experience on DJI forums, I have managed to complete the upgrade without any issues and I will be describing bellow the steps.

Preparing for the firmware upgrade:
- recharge the RC (both for those with dual RC) and one TB47 / TB48 battery (50% should be sufficient, but recommended to have 100% before starting)
- download the latest firmware from http://www.dji.com/product/inspire-1/download
- extract the WM610_FW_V01.02.00.17.bin file from the downloaded archive (Inspire_1_Firmwarev1.2.0.17_en.zip)
- connect to the computer a memory card with minimum 600x speed (the 16gb that came with the Inspire 1 will do just fine)
- take a back-up of any needed contents of the card and delete all files and folders on it or simply quick format the card (this step is recommended but not a must)
- copy ONLY the WM610_FW_V01.02.00.17.bin file directly on the memory card (root folder); make sure that this file is not being copied within existing folders (common mistake is to have DCIM folder selected before pasting the file) or with a containing folder

Upgrading the Aircraft:
- power on the master RC
- power on the I1 and wait for initial checks to complete
- exit Travel Mode using the minimum 4 Up-Down movements of the dedicated switch on the master RC (switch around the RTH button)
- power off the I1
- power off the master RC (I recommend upgrading the firmware WITHOUT the remote or DJI Pilot application connected)
- insert the memory card containing the WM610_FW_V01.02.00.17.bin file into the camera
- mount the gimbal to the I1
- power on the I1 and wait for the upgrade procedure to start (you should hear the repeated series of 4 consecutive beeps D-D-D-D as in my video)
- depending on the speed of the memory card used and the number of components needing an upgrade, this procedure will probably last between 5-45 mins (mine took about 5 mins); wait for the repeated beep sequence to change rhythm to a "one beep - pause - two beeps" D---D-D as it happens in this video at 0:37
- power off the I1
- remove the memory card from the camera and connect to a computer
- the contents of the WM610_FW_RESULT_AB.txt file should be "result: success" (please note that trying to upgrade AGAIN after a successful upgrade will result in a misleading "result: cancel" which is the exact same result as when the user cancels the operation during the upgrade)
- locate the WM610_FW_LOG_AB.txt and check its contents (explaining what happened during the upgrade); mine are shown below
[00006255]Packet [C:\WM610_FW_V01.02.00.17.bin] detected.

Upgrading the master RC:
- use an USB card reader (USB 2.0 not USB 3.0) to insert the memory card in the master RC; optionally, copy the WM610_FW_V01.02.00.17.bin file in the root folder of a memory stick to be inserted in the master RC; I do not prefer using the camera as a reader because that requires powering the I1 before the master RC has been upgraded to a compatible version
- power on the master RC
- wait for the upgrade procedure to start (you should see the red light change to blue and you should hear the repeated series of 4 consecutive beeps D-D-D-D as in my video); if this does not happen within 1 minute after powering on the master RC, use another card reader or memory stick
- wait for the upgrade procedure to stop, indicated by the blue light changing into green (success) or red (failure); this procedure should last an aproximate 10 minutes (again depends on speed of reading data from inserted media)
- power off the master RC
- remove the memory card / memory stick from the master RC and connect to a computer
- the contents of the WM610_FW_RESULT_GS.txt file should be "result: success"
- delete the WM610_FW_RESULT_GS.txt file

Upgrading the slave RC:
- ensure that the WM610_FW_RESULT_GS.txt file was deleted from the memory card or stick used for upgrading the master RC, prior to inserting it into the slave RC
- power on the slave RC
- wait for the upgrade procedure to start
- wait for the upgrade procedure to end
- power off the slave RC
- verify the contents of the newly generated WM610_FW_RESULT_GS.txt file as explained for the master RC

Final checks:
- connect DJI Pilot application to the master RC
- power on master RC (power on slave RC if applies)
- power on the I1
- wait for the I1 and master RC to get connected; in the unfortunate situation in which the master RC does not connect to the I1 after BOTH were upgraded, please follow the binding procedure described at page 32 in the user manual
- check the status of the aircraft and the version numbers of all modules using the DJI Pilot application
- even it may not be required, I recommend that all calibrations should be performed again after a firmware upgrade (IMU Advanced calibration, RC calibration, Gimbal calibration, Compass calibration)
- find an extremely free of hazards area to perform a few test flights with careful maneuvers (similar testing as we have done immediately after purchase)

Thanks for reading and safe flying!
