I think that the major problem is that Tourists believe they could do what they want, when they aren't in their own Country. Even more US citizens.
Try not to stop your car on a STOP sign in the US and if seen by an officer, you will get for sure asked for documents and possible pay a fee.
Try not to follow rules in the US and you will get many troubles.

How do you know it was an American?

There is an assumption amongst few Italians that Americans are for one reason or another stupid. The vast majority of Italians though do not feel that way and I apologize for this individual. This person doesn't represent Italians as the good people we are.

Brought the Mavic at the  Police, they asked help to make it work and to download pictures and movies.

They said there are "interesting pictures and movies" of "sensible targets"

Admit it.
You want to keep the drone, and you're willing to wait for the police to give it to you.
I'm sure that you told the authorities an inflated scenario about how/why you were in possession of this "dangerous" fugitive aircraft.
BTW...you cannot unring a bell.

So then, reading between the lines,  you really don't want the owner to come forward so that the MP"...,becomes the property of the founder".  Therefore you post here in your attempt to find the owner... and then scare him/her off with a threat of "facing a complaint" for allegedly "flying in an unrestricted area without permits"... just to cover your arse and get a free MP?  I hope you understand that's just cold hearted... in any country.

That's how I read it too

He wasn't expecting DJI Ken to offer to find the owner. He already decided to keep it I think, maybe hoping everyone else would say how lucky he was. Only when Ken replied with a solution did he offer a number of reasons why it wasn't a good idea to do that. Backfired
