On the stock 15mm Lens that ships with the X5S has a blank ring behind the lens hood.  I assume this is a balancing ring.  If I want to add a filter to my lens, should I screw the filter directly into this blank ring behind the lens hood or should I replace the blank ring with my filter and then put the lens hood back on?

I don't have the X5S but it uses the same lens as the X5. That is a rebranded Lumix 15mm. Use filter in place of the balance ring and still use the plastic hood. That's what worked on the X5, should be the same on the X5S.
