Let me start out by saying that I have NO interest in trying monetize my new hobby.  I already have a great job that I love.  I'm aware that in my area (USA), you need an FAA license in order to profit from drone activity, although you are not prohibited from selling photos that come as a result of pleasure flying.

I know people have successful photography businesses, and many have incorporated aireal photography into their existing businesses.  For those that are doing some sort of commercial photography work, what are the going rates.  For discussion sake, I'm in Dallas, Texas, USA, and I imagine the market is different all over.  I'm sure that the rate vary widely, as they do with standard photography, just interested to see what people charge from a point of curiousity.  I haven't found anyone online that posts their rates, and I don't want to bother people since I am not actually a potential client.

My best wishes for success to any of you making a go of it commercially.

So your understanding is that if you fly recreationally but later decide to sell the photos from the flight that you don't need 107 certification? That's an interesting take on the FAA's regulations and one I hadn't heard before.

I would imagine that it depends upon the type of work, so you'd probably need to be more specific before you could get any meaningful answers. You might also get better information if you call someone local who does that, such as Drones Plus Dallas. I doubt they'd be upset over being asked what their rates are for various types of photography work even if you don't expect to hire them.

Maybe I don't understand the selling pictures part properly, but it is of really no consequence to me.  Aside from having no talent, I doubt anyone would want pictures of the random stuff I take pictures of, and I have no desire to monetize this hobby.  I enjoy the flying part, I really have no interest in the creative photography aspect of it.  I like being able to see things from up above, and to feel like I'm going where my body can't.

What is a better way to look at the FAA's regulations, would you say?

I'd say that someone in the U.S. who hopes / plans / expects to make any money off their flights should probably get a 107 certification. But having said that, I doubt very much that an individual pilot selling photos occasionally -- or even more often -- is likely to ever hear from the FAA.

You need 107 to sell or even if you bartered for the service. You can find more information in here:  https://www.faa.gov/uas/getting_started/fly_for_work_business/

Technically any profit derived from UA outdoor flights requires an ... license.  But as one DroneFlying stated, I doubt occasional use will be flagged by the ....  I do suggest all pilots, recreation and professional know the ... and local laws in their area.  In fact, their are many low cost and even FREE materials out there to inform pilots as ignorance is no excuse.  I am a pro pilot, but it only cost me for example $155 dollars to earn my ... certificate months ago ($150 exam fee and $5 for an really good study prep app call UAS107. Knowing the rules and flying legally is much better for the industry, and for your pocket as fines can be in excess of $10k depending on the violation.  Know the rules and be safe!
