Hi guys,
actually we have a ND 4 (-2 stops) filter delivered  with the inspire1.

Hopeless waiting for a solution to film at sunny days at 180 degrees (double shutter speed of the fps) we need a ND 8 or even better a ND 16, I am looking for a manufacturer in China (all stuff is comming from China) as I am living here (Qindao).  Which one would you like ? The 8 or the 16 ? Personally I think at a 16, as mostly my shutter speed turns around 1/320 with an ND 4 and at 1080p50, so 2 stops less seems to me the best.

What is your opinion ?

We are talking with a manufacturer that may produce on our requirements.  I suggested them max weight is 4 grams (the dji one has 3 grams). Monday they will test out.

If all becomes reality, I want to order 500p for export to an US distributor, as otherwise transport costs for 1 piece is too high.

Keep you informed.

A promised to inform: our factory already can produce nd-filters down to 5 grams. Today we sent one of the DJI to let analyze and get as close as possible to 3 grams

Would you be so kind as to checking on a Skylight Filter (1A) That would be a bit better than the UV Filter. It is a bit warmer and the blue in the sky is a bit brighter and it still cuts some of the Haze.
Thanks

If they can produce a 3-4 gram with the right thread, we think to make a set of a 3 and a 4 stop. A 2 stop we already have. Pricing will be discussed later if we find a US and European distributor. Hope for some news on thursday after they could analyze the possibilities as we also ask for high quality coated and anti-reflection resin.

we keep it in mind, but I would not advice to stag to one on the other as we do not preview that. Adding an extra thread will rise the weight and we do all effort to be as close as possible to the original one, or better.

im using a .90 gel under the dji nd, and it seems perfect i can dial in 50-60fps in bright daylight. if you fly over snow, you will need more for sure.

I stacked a 4 and an 8 on a sunny day (not flying just testing on the ground) it was perfect. I think at very least having a 4 and an 8 in the bag would be great. Let us know how things progress.

Does shutter speed really matter that much on a camera like this that has an electronic shutter?  I've got plenty of footage with the stock ND on sunny days and it looks great to me. Would love to see a comparison between whoever is stacking NDs and what the same thing looks like at a higher shutter speed.

I didn't mean to stack them. Just would like to have a 1A Filter on instead of the UV.

Has anyone tried using ND gel plastic sheet and putting it behind the clear lens? I bet that would work.

I do not have yet. Factory is analyzing to produce the same as the DJI, will have answer this week. Afterwards, if everything goes well, and fulfilling our requirements concerning quality, we will first test ourself and order to produce a 100 sets of 3 different ND.
Sorry not able to help immediately.

after a possible successful production of ND-filters, we can consider other filters. Step by step…  but keep it in mind !

NEWS !
3 grams is reached !
We are dealing with 2 factories in China (we live in China).
One factory confirmed the weight and quality. Only the thread needs to be tested by myself. They send us today an ND -3,-4,-5 with 2 different threads and possibility to stack. If the threads are not adapted to the DJI-camera, they can make special frame with the right thread, BUT, there will be a minimum (reasonable) order for that. If need for an -6 the minimum order will be much higher (>1000) what I find personally not worth. A stacking gives possibilities of -7, -8 and -9. Not bad for 6 grams in this case !
Still waiting for answer of the second factory that received our DJI-sample.

Keep you informed, Renaat

What is the thread size and diameter of the camera lens?

37mm BUT outside screw...it's female with VERY shallow threads. I know someone will crossthread or strip the filter sent by DJI.
Camera is the MALE screwing into female (tight shallow)37mm Filter...:-) sorry that is the only way to remember this unusual thread..

The thread is completely different from what is available on the market. Much finer. In some days I will receive some filters with different thread sizes, if not the right ones, we let produce the same as the DJI, but with in AND outside threads. I do not like to have a different thread and force it on, the actual camera thread is already not too strong.

ultra light, double thread specially made, nd 3,4,5, transport from China, there will be a price for …. very "roughly" thinking it will be around 40 usd + 20 usd transport to your home. If possible we try for cheaper. Or if there is a US distributor  …. transport will be lower but he will take his margins and will perhaps not be interested in such small order.

Hi fellows,
today I received 3 different ND-filters of the same factory, conclusions:
- 5 grams, even they told me 3 (that is China), sure due to the extra external thread
- quality is OK
- thread is not right, what I expected, but they can make same thread as DJI with a minimum order, no problem
- no ND-6 at this factory (or need big volume > 1000)

so: I will send these back and wait for the results of the other factory that still not received my clear DJI filter. As this factory will "see" the one to copy, I am more confident in the results. More, this factory is much bigger as the first one and are highly qualified specialist in filters.

After seeing video results of the Inspire and personal experience with,  I really feel the necessity of these stronger ND-filters to get better results at settings sharp 0, contrast -2, saturation -1 in log. Stronger ND will smooth the sharpness, flicker and other artifacts.
Anyone who knows the native ISO of the camera ?

Keep you informed, Renaat.

the native ISO of the camera must be 100, as most of dslr camera, the iso with the less noise, extremely in opposite with a camera as the sony A7s that has a 3200 native iso or the sony FS7 with 2000. Conclusion: only one iso to use = 100 for the highest dynamic range.

UPDATING:
Still waiting reply from factory for the frame. This is the biggest issue. As we bought 3 ND-filters from another factory, but with the wrong threats and too heavy, I took the resin out of the filter and weighted : 1 gr.
So the frame factory needs to produce a frame of 2-3 gr. For the moment, I will "add" the new filter and insert with the stock filter on the camera and see the result when having time to fly. Enough threat space to add my second ND filters.
Test to do: ND 2 of stock + ND8,16,32 (I took out of the too heavy ones)
Some patience with the chinese ….  you already learned it with DJI,

Update:
1. the good news: first sample is in construction. It took some delay, as the factory needed to order another metal that is lighter as their usual one.
2. the bad news: the samples I received from another factory I tested out: I took out de glass (as it was  too heavy, 5/6 gr) and put it behind the clear dji filter: the ND 8 is working perfect, the 16 and 32 are a disaster in quality (color shift)

conclusion: waiting for factory 1 to finish their sample and check for control: weight should be OK (as they will use another metal and confirmed it is in my limits), the threat (I warned them several times for it), glass quality (to check myself when I receive a first sample (but rather confident as they are specialists in ND)

Keep you informed.

as living for a long time in China, my experience is: China has great products, often invented by the west but manufactured in China, but…..  mostly they miss  "the final touch". A final touch in design, in quality, in service ……  The best results are manufacturers where is a cooperation with western and chinese. Take a chinese by the hand and say how to do, you will have a great product. Let him do it alone, you will get chinese rubbish for chinese only price matters.
One of our activities is corporate video: most of the telephone calls we receive starts with what is the price, they even have not idea what and how they want a video. Have a look at a chinese website (not dji, bravo) …  you will have headache: too much on one page, no design,…
I will do the control and will show the result before any advice to buy it.
