Depends on where you live after next week. Before anyone freaks out, 400 feet high is very high for a drone of this size.

What's going on next week? I'm fine with the 400 feet, I'm just wondering if this has lower limitations because of its size.

Looks like more than 120 meters so I expect 500 meters max also works on both 2.4 and 5.8 GHz
Overview
Spark's remote controller features a brand new Wi-Fi signal transmission system, capable of controlling the aircraft* and gimbal camera at a maximum transmission range of 1.2 mi (2 km).** The remote controller can connect to a mobile device wirelessly and display a live video feed via the DJI GO 4 app. Its folding clamps allow you to attach your mobile device securely. Maximum remote controller battery life is 2.5 hours approximately.***

*The Spark remote controller is currently only compatible with Spark aircraft.
**The remote controller can reach its maximum transmission distance (FCC) in a wide open area with no electro-magnetic interference and at an altitude of about 120 meters.
***The maximum working time should be taken for reference only.
Highlights
Video transmission range of up to 1.2mi (2km).
Max speed of up to 31 mph (50 kph) in Sport Mode.

Yes.... and the rest if it can fly 1.2 miles that means it can fly 1.2 miles high, it just depends where they have it capped.

It's really hard to say how high it will go, with this new registration prossesing coming up I'm not sure how high any of dji's drones will fly anymore but I'm assuming that it will be the same as the rest, 500 meters. If dji puts us on a leash, then 400 feet. I think it would be safe to say at least 400 feet.

The Go 4 App default is 120m and can be set for up to 500m....but the legal guideline is120m or 400 feet in the US.

You are not going to see it at 400 feet.... very easily anyway

Really ? Do the math would you really fly 1.2 miles away with a 17 min max battery life?  I am intrigued  though about how good video and latency is using th RC and phone.  paired with RC. What is the point of diminishment of latency and video quality

Yes, the P3 can fly three miles out and back in 16 minutes or less.
So 1.2 miles out and back would only take five or so minutes.
Check YouTube. A lot of people have already done it with plenty of battery left to do it again.

After much consideration getting the spark I finally decided and got the Mavic yesterday.  Cancelled my order for the spark and I think I made a wise decision.  Spark is all new and after a couple of months people will start getting rid of it.  To me it does not make any economical sense getting the spark.

Could have said the same about the mavic on release. I think $699 vs $1299 is a better deal. But I hope the mavic is what you're looking for.

Also, looking at the few still images from Spark vs Mavic - Most people prefer the Spark's quality and colour results. A little worrying considering the vast price difference but it all comes down to what you are using it for. I love my P4Pro but Spark is a good holiday drone.

Its MAX ~13 minutes ( 9% battery left) is what i get and people on youtube. So not taking in mind wind , its a trip 6 minutes one way. More than that ,and you are #$%^.  And why to go so far if you will not have even time to snap a photo ?

The altitude limit is based upon the take off point. So using the hot air balloon example, let's say the balloon is on the ground along with the spark. Both take off. At the 450m point you manage to land the spark inside the basket. When you take off again the altitude on the spark will be reset back to 0m and now you and the balloon can climb another 500m. Of course you will need to check local laws/regulations as to whether flying this high is legal or not. If it was me, I wouldn't attempt this when piloting the spark from the basket. There are just too many ways this can go wrong - props (even with prop guards installed), nylon balloon shell, and propane supply hoses. Just call it a day at 500m.

haha..thanks for your reply..i do believe its quite risky. Just wondering whether anyone had ever done dronie while taking hot ballon. it would be the best moment capture if i can do it myself. otherwise i need someone else from ground to use mavic etc to capture for me

You can't turn off the bottom sensors. But please explain what your problem is exactly. You want to take off at a high place, e.g. from the top of a high building and then descend, did I understand that correctly? This is possible, you will just get negative altitude values displayed.

Good to know Wacht - Grand Canyon trip coming up and had been wondering how the Spark would handle being launched at close to sea level then seeing the ground immediately drop away an addition 1500-ish ft as I flew it over the canyon.

BTW, I read on one of the Spark tech reviews a while back (can't remember which one now) that the AC's physical service ceiling is 13,128 ft. Can't speak to that figure's accuracy of course, and obviously, if the pilot was at sea level, you'd be out of range at 6336 ft (based on 1.2 mile max range for the RC/otherwise perfect conditions) - not to mention likely out of battery as well. But, the 13,128 ft ceiling seems reasonable if that's the point at which the air becomes too thin to support the drone's weight at max motor speed (also starts gettin very cold up there - could be based on battery/other component temperature too).

Yes this is correct according to the specs given by DJI. In addition to that Spark is by default limited to 500 meters altitude above ground.

You need to factor in your take off altitude as well.  Ie if you are already in the mountains where the air is thinner, the spark is going to work harder to maintain altitude and climb.

I live at the bottom of a hill that goes up about 900 feet from my back yard (it’s a Regional Open Space). I have the maximum height set as 400feet because that is the law. If I fly my Spark in the uphill direction what will happen?  I assume that the drone will come closer and closer to the ground as it travels in the uphill direction.  Will it eventually sense that it is t of low?  What will happen then?
