Would you buy a Spark battery that was lighter weight and of course shorter flight time to have your Spark weigh in at 250 grams?
Hopefully someone at DJI is monitoring the results.

Better than not being able to fly at all because its 50gram too heavy.  A 250 gram Spark would be exempt from regulations in many countries.

Consider even using gesture to take photos may take 5mins to set the position, then you have to prepare for land and change the battery.....

Even if the flight time would only be 5 minutes: I would go for it, since this is the question of "getting a few shots in urban environment or not".
(Or find a spot at least 100/300ft away from any redidential house and more than the same distance from any  primary road and any railroad.)

Using wifi control for a quick pic or vid clip would most likely work.  Losing 50g will also extend flight time because of weight reduction.

Props weigh 25 grams each so just fly with 2 props, one on each corner?, it may wobble a bit?

Flight time is already too short as it is.  Currently 12 min flight time followed by 1.5 hrs charging... Already ordered two extra batteries as it is....     :-/

Considering the results of the poll I don't think anybody is reading the OP to see the reason WHY some of us not only want a lighter battery but NEED one to fly legally.

I think this is a great idea. 10 minutes capacity would be just enough to get a couple quick shots, which is mostly what I do when travelling. After you get your shots, you could then charge up the batter from one of those portable phone charging bricks, which I also carry with me anywhere I go.

Then you could use the default batter, and wouldn't need to buy the lighter one that let's Canadians fly legally.

If it takes you 5 minutes to take a photo with the spark you need way more practise with it.

I would definitely be interested in this!  I'm agonizing over this because I am in Canada, so I need a 250g drone to avoid the legal issues.

Historically, has anyone ever made 3rd party batteries for DJI Drones?  There are tons of 3rd party batteries for other devices, but I could see a market for a 3rd party vendor making a 1/2 capacity battery to allow the sub 250g limit -- that is making the big assumption that there is 50g to lose in the battery and have it useful at all.  Anyone know how much the Spark battery weights currently?

I just found the specs: the battery weighs 95g -- there may be hope since the electronics and shell is included in that -- it remains to be seen how much of this weight is actual battery.  And, if DJI is interested in making the smaller battery (it would re-open the Canadian and I'm sure other markets).

How do we contact DJI to ask for a smaller battery?

Whle i am with you guys but i'd believe if a mass drone with camera & liveview is <250g they would simply lower the limit.
In Germany its <250g AND no camera so we have to stick with the larger drones regulations anyways (which are okay...).

Canada's problem is the regulation that excludes drones from around airports. The zone is 9km radius.  Many places have airports/heliports closer than 18km spacing which means there is no place to legally fly.  I believe the exclusion zone around airports is much smaller in Germany.

Wouldn't a GPS enabled height restriction (rather than a no fly function) be one way to make this work even near an airport?  Even something as low as 50 m (or a crazy 25 m) would allow some use like taking selfies/family pictures.  Still, some way to lower the weight without hacking into the drone would be nice!

Yes, I would without a doubt buy DJI spark with an lighter battery to get below 250grams. Even if that would mean 3 minutes flight time.

I live in Canada and because of our stupid dumb retarded minister of transport I absolutely need a 249 grams (or less) drone but with a good camera and a good stabilizer.

No and why should we downgrade?

they need to make a battery that weighs just a little  more with a 20% increase in flight duration. A lighter battery is a bad idea for sure.

If you live in Canada, I can sure see why you want this.
But, it might be hard to take half the weight out of the battery and still have something that flies for more than a couple of minutes, since there is also 'overhead' weight in the battery that will have to remain there (casing, electronics etc.).

Next the AC will be off balance probably, so they will have to do something about that also. (correcting this with just the engines might also cause less efficient flying, even less flight time)
Not sure if you still should want to modify an existing product to this extent.
But I sure understand the reason for Canadians.

The 250gm limit doesn't seem to be limited to Canada.  Seen it mentioned in the USA and Germany as the lower regulated weight.  I think this weight is driven from ICAO.

That might be true indeed (I have not looked it up yet), but they are probably not (yet) combined with other strict rules limiting your drone options in Germany / USA.
At least that is my assumption based on the fact that I have not heard of anybody outside Canada talk about it. (for what that is worth ;)  )

If you're going for safety, the prop guards will put 50 grams straight back on.
