when trying to get the spark to get into follow mode my spark goes backwards and upwards however, once there the lights are red and it does not recognise me trying to beckon it with the 'y' shape?

Spark seems to have a few issues.

Have you tried it more than once?  It took a few attempts for me to get it to work.
