Can someone tell me what the difference would when one shoots video in 4K using H264 vs also shooting video in 4K in H265.

H265 uses different compression and files are smaller without sacrificing quality but you need to be able to edit/play back in that format. H264 is the older and very common in use, Mac computers will be compatible with H265, when new OS comes out this fall.

One last question, when you play back your unedited video. Can one notice the difference between H264 and H265??

Theoretically, the H.265 would be better quality for any given file size since it will have more data in it due to better compression. Of course if your end game is YouTube it will be severely compressed and the original Codec will have less impact. I would try both and compare yourself. I put mine on a 65" 4K TV directly from USB and the H.265 looks better to me. Your mileage may vary.

I would avoid using H.265 until video editing codecs, software, GPU's, CPU's  etc..etc...eventually become better optimized for this format.

On paper, H.265 is a superior technical codec and eventually I think it will supplant H.264 as the dominant codec.   But on most machines today, you are going to really struggle badly to export, edit, and play back, apply effects and color grading in real-time.  Oh, and exporting your final output takes FOREVER....at least for now.   Whether one can tell the difference between something recorded or encoded in H.264 vs. H.265...that is highly subjective and depends on a million different factors. Since most of what I publish is viewed on a very small screen.  I highly doubt one could tell the difference.
