Exported a video in H.264, 1080p, file size is 45 mb, etc. Video is perfectly fine on Vimeo but turns out crap on Instagram.

What is the trick to get good quality on Instagram?

IG compresses all drone and GoPro footage I upload. I even upload some in 4k, works fine on all other sites except IG.

Instagram compresses stuff to 720 P so I guess you lose some information on the way. I use the stuff from GO App straight to IG and I would say the quality is OK, not comparable with Vimeo, YT for obvious reasons. Don't know what sw you use for post but just google and find out the settings. Here is one example for PP.

good luck

I created a IG test account to test different quality setting. You can see the video here in comparaison with the Vimeo below

What are you seeing in the Instagram version that bothers you (besides the crop)?

Yeah well, true that it is not so bad! I may have watched the video when it was buffering. Turns out no so bad after all !

Did you try on your smartphone? On desktop it's ok, but on a smartphone I find it a little bit pixellized

Yeah, first time through on my iPhone it stuttered and buffered, but second time it looked good. I think my connection is a bit slow at the moment.
