I was told that the app won't allow a flight if a firmware update is available - is that true?  I heard there was a firmware update and want to control when I install it.

No you don't have to update but I would recommend it.  There are good new features in the update when used with Go4.1.4

You don't have to upgrade it when you take a release notification. We always recommend that users upgrade the latest firmware because it's the optimization to the previous one, but that depends on you. If your drone's now performing fine and you don't want to upgrade it, that's alright.
