I suspect it's safer than it looks (not that I'm confident enough to test with my own fingers, though!)
The fact that the propellers fold up, and that the blades don't "lock" into place and are only held in position by centrifugal force, means that if the spinning blades run into something, it's only the inertia of theblade itself (and not that of the prop as a whole, or of the Mavic) that can inflict damage. And since the props are really light, mostly what happens is that the prop just folds on impact.
I've had one occasion where I stupidly allowed my Mavic to slide sideways into my own house. Afterwards: no visible damage at all, either to the prop or to the house (noting that these were soft cedar shakes on the house, would show damage easily). Fortunately for me, there was no damage to the Mavic despite my idiocy (it was only a couple of feet above the ground, and it fell at an angle that spared the gimbal). I was very impressed that there wasn't so much as a scratch on the props.
Of course, a human finger is probably softer than a cedar shake... but I'd be surprised if anyone could actually "lose a finger". I could see getting a nasty cut, but I'd guess not worse than that.
Not that I'm volunteering to test it, though. :-) |
