I have a question about Canadian drone enforcement (not the laws, but how the laws are being enforced).
Are there some people who have the job to monitor social medial for drone activity which violates Canadian regulations? Are there people in the field who will cite violations (write tickets) or even make arrests?
Short version: no, they dont.
Long version: Transport Canada has 16 regional inspectors nationwide, tasked with reviewing SFOC applications, flight plans, and investigating incidents. They just dont have time to browse social media looking for violations. That said, if a gross violation is reported to them (drone video of planes on approach to a major airport, for example), they do investigate, aggressively so, and will prosecute.
With regards to the new rules, the enforcement has moved from TC to local police. The Minister of Transport famously told people to call 911 if they see a drone doing wrong (this has changed, it isnt an emergency). So now, the manpower has increased, however they prioritize all calls, and "person flying drone near my house" just isnt a priority. More than that, local police are far more interested in prosecuting real crimes, not inconveniences, so even if they do see you flying, most likely you will be told to stop and leave.
The fines are out of control, too. Not putting your full contact info on the drone is $3000. Would any reasonable cop issue that fine to a 12 year old with a $500 spark? I dont think so. |
