So picked up a 3 pack of Polarpro Mavic edition filters that comes with CP (circular polarizer) ND8 (neutral density 3-stop) and ND16 (neutral density 4-stop). The fit and finish is great as well as the case they come in.

Some questions.

  • Does "circular polarizer" mean that the filter doesn't need to be oriented a certain way in relation to the camera lens to obtain optimum filtering capabilities? I guess not sure what circular is supposed to mean
  • Is there a reason why the camera now has a harder time auto-focusing with a filter installed? It used to be very proficient in auto but now requires tapping to focus more often than not
  • What's the difference between these that come with the Black outer ring VS the Bronze coloured cinema series
  • Should these cause the images to be grainy? Looks like some quality has been lost

Ultimately I bought these only for the polarized one to cut through the glare of water to find fish but couldn't source just the single CP locally at least. Wondering if it's worth trading up for better quality. Vivid series. Or another brand...

Thanks in advance!

I got the same pack you have, only used the CP so far.  Good results. As far as positioning yes it has to be lined up a certain way to get the "SWEET SPOT"

If you look through the filter and rotate slowly until you get the required effect and note top position. Fit prior to start up and you are good to go.

If you want an easy way to see it...simply look at a flatscreen computer monitor or television. It will show up easily.

Hi Go.Fish,

We'd be happy to answer those questions for you.  Circular polarizers are different from linear polarizers in that they can be rotated to increase or decrease the intensity of the polarization effect.  Linear polarizers do not have this capability.  Most of the polarizers we sell are of the circular variety, including the ND-PL hybrids present in some other sets.

The filters should not hinder the camera's ability to focus.  If mounted properly the camera should ignore their presence for the purposes of focusing any shot.  If you believe there is a focus issue of some kind that is only present with the filters, please reach out to support@polarpro.com and we'll be happy to help out.

The differently-colored bezels on the filters are there to denote which series the filter is a part of.  The black filters are the Professional Series, while the bronze are the Cinema Series.  The difference between the two series is the quality of the glass used.  Cinema Series glass is of a higher quality than the glass in any other filters we make, and is coated multiple times for a boost in glare and lens flare resistance.  These tend to be popular with professionals, and folks who just want the best possible image quality when shooting.

The filters will not produce any grain in the images.  Grain is a digital artifact that is normally produced by camera sensors in low-light situations, or if the ISO is boosted past about 400.  If you're seeing grain, we'd recommend taking a look at the camera settings to see what it's shooting with, especially so if you're shooting in auto.

Hopefully this information helps, but if you have any other questions please reach out to the email above and we'll be happy to continue helping out.

Took delivery of my Cinema Series Vivid 3 pack yesterday and good so far. Took them out this morning for some sunrise mist shots. Happy so far. The best thing is that you can leave them on for gimbal calibration at start-up which is a boost.
