Any issues with the MP, switching to atti-mode with the low light ? or remained lock in gps throughout the course of flight.

GPS signal is not affected by low light or night. You should have full satelites if flying with a clear view of the sky day or night.

Oh good to know. Haven't flown at night yet.

When I first got the Mavic and test flew in house for a very brief moment, low or weak light had it in atti-mode but then again no gps lock b/c I wasn't outside.

Very Nice video... the "flickering"/jumping in the beginning made me think my PC / Internet was acting up... past that the colors and light look amazing.
Are you using any ND filters on the drone? If so what ones?

Also I noticed you have a huge open area to fly in along the coast and Miami Beach... nice! Very ENVIOUS! (don't have that option here in N Indiana)

Lol!!

I do know its not recommended to fly at night, but its a recommendation, not a law. The FAA does not mention anything about night flying for recreational pilots. I have looked for this information many times. You will be able to find many sites talking about the night restrictions, but I really dont follow their rules since they're not the FAA.

Hey Bob! Thank so so much! If you watch the video with headphones or with audio you will be able to see that the flickering/jumping is on purpose to match the music
I did not use any filters. Filters will not help you much when shooting at night since you have to try to get as much light as possible, not block any. A little bit of post processing of the colors, shadows and highlights was done in Premiere.

I've also checked that with FAA site, nothing against flying at night (unless somebody finds it).
I would imagine that it's tricky with the low light but if you've got the skills, common-sense nearby and are responsible, pilot should be fine. I've haven't tried yet but I most def will in a secluded/open airspace.

Thanks Jos! When shooting at night with the MP I have to keep the ISO as high as possible depending on how much ligh you will have available. For this shoot I used ISO 1600. I also use the manual mode to be able to set the frame rate to the lowest setting possible allowing the sensor to receive as much light as possible.

Exactly! I fly at night not only because I like it better but also because I can keep an eye better on the Mavic than during the day. At night you can see those red LEDs very bright against the black sky and can spot the Mavic in a second. During the day this UAV gets lost very easily. When you look at your screen to line up the shot and then look up again the Mavic is gone and you have to take a minute to find it. There's also way less air traffic at night.

Thank you for confirming thats for Part 107, not related to recreational pilots. The rules for recreational pilots are very clear from the FAA:

Source: https://www.faa.gov/uas/getting_started/fly_for_fun/

FAA Safety Guidelines
-Fly at or below 400 feet
-Be aware of airspace requirements and restrictions
-Stay away from surrounding obstacles
-Keep your UAS within sight
-Never fly near other aircraft, especially near airports
-Never fly over groups of people
-Never fly over stadiums or sports events
-Never fly near emergency response efforts such as fires
-Never fly under the influence of drugs or alcohol

Thats it! No mention of night flying. Please stop looking for what people are doing wrong and worry about you doing the right thing.

I have to mention also ... P107 pilots can CHOOSE to fly as a hobbiest if you are feeling left out.. Simply leave the card at home and don't take payment for your work. Very simple you too can fly at night! ;)

Yup! Exactly!! I believe there's a permit that allows for Part 107 pilots to fly at night as well.

I just think that there's so much confusion with what laws apply to who that a lot of information out there is not very clear or accurate. I have seen sites saying that recreational pilots are not allowed to fly at night. The problem I have with that is that I cant find where the FAA, which is the complete law over all, mentions anything on their site about night flying for fun and not business.

For this one I took off from Watson Island near the MacArthur Causeway. There is an NFZ around Downtown but not because of MIA. There is a sea plane base right where the cruises park that creates that 5 mile NFZ, but I have contacted them before and I was told that as long as I dont fly right above them I was clear to fly there. On top of that they dont fly there at night so we're good. The Mavic gives the NFZ message but it's not a hard NFZ that would prevent you from flying. What you do need to check for is the Marlins Stadium. If they're having a game you will not be able to fly in downtown as it is within the 3 mile radius of the stadium. There are helicopters that fly once in a while in the area as well but they fly at the 500' height and they're very easy to hear and spot so you can keep out of their way. Always check with an app that would tell you the current status to fly. I use Airmap and it has always been very accurate and up to date. Let me know man, we can get together for some night flying!
