We just purchased a Mavic for a shoot in which we will be following ATVs along a mountain trail with trees all around us and above us (we'll be under the canopy).  If the drone flies upward 20m for any kind of RTH, it's going to end up stuck in a tree. I'm unclear on why the minimum RTH is so high and can't account for being in such a situation.

How do we handle this situation?

Yes, what Tiho said.  Set it to hover.

If you're below the canopy with trees all around, what do you think is going to happen if it were to RTH at say 2m?  (Hyopthetically if it let you do it.)  It's not going to follow the trail!  You're screwed regardless of the alt setting.  Hover is the only way.  But be aware that you may lose GPS under the trees, so if it goes into ATTI, the hover will be more like drifting into a tree trunk.  Pick your poison.

A common accident to occur is where the Return to Home feature is hit and the aircraft collides with the trees above. You can adjust the Return to Home height in the App. Sometimes it helps to use selectively.

Know your terrain, never fly under or around trees or buildings unless you like to waste your money!

Agree with 2#. It is important to set a suitable facilsafe altitude before each flight. More details, please refer the User Manual:

The obvious answer was given several times - do not use RTH but let it hover when losing signal. But You are Right - 0 should be safe possibility to chose! The only problem will be even on the same hight if it tries to RTH it will most certainly hit a tree in a forest
