Great video! This is so good it could be used as a promotional video.  Did you have to get permission to fly in any of the areas? Last time I was downtown I was wondering if I needed permission to fly there.

I grew up in Chicago, moving to California after my Viet Nam era military duty was done.  Today, I love to tell people that Chicago is "a great place to be from".

Believe it or not, all of the flying was done outside of no fly zones. The main area that is NFZ is above and around soldier field, and all the way out by Midway Airport, so I was not able to launch within about a half mile radius around the stadium. Everywhere else seems to be fair game!
I did have a little trouble with some guy (not an officer) telling me I couldn't fly there because there were "too many people" (even though I was over the water the entire time), when I was flying off the end of Navy Pier. I was bringing it back in at that point, so I spared him my planned speech on how the FAA says it's ok to fly there, so what authority does he have, etc. and I just packed up and left...

Just curious, why can't you take shots like this by you? Restrictions or no skyscrapers?

Actually both.
But mainly because we are not allowed to fly over about anything man made.

#dronepolice need not apply. All of the flying was completely legal, not within any NFZ's, and I was either flying over water or avoiding being directly over people, for all of the shots.

The cropped sensor on the Mavic camera gives the illusion that it is much closer to the masts, than it actually is. I was actually flying about 15-20 feet above them, and standing directly behind the Mavic, up higher than the boat, on a pier, so I had a very good view to make sure there was no chance of collision. Same goes for the flying over the church roof in one of the last clips.

Ah, gotcha! Man, that's one hell of a restriction, not flying over ANYTHING man made. Really narrows down your options... At least you have some beautiful natural scenery in those parts!

Indeed.
There are some exceptions but there are not many.
You 'can' fly over 1 separate building, over a 30 km p/h road in a city and 60 km p/h road outside of the city.
But that is about it.
Everything else is not allowed...
So we have to make our moves carefully.

Yeah, I would have a hard time not flying over any building... Interesting stuff! Never knew other countries had drone laws like that. Next time, I will hold my tongue, when I start complaining about all of our restrictions!  

Looks great.  I was in Chicago a few weeks ago with my Spark, however, I was terrified to shoot in such a dense area as I previously lost a Spark!  Now I wish I would have.  Picked up a MP today and these videos have me ready to get out and get some video!

One of the best videos of city scape. Great sound too!

Hahahahahahaha. There is more reason for these laws, but mainly insurance claims, privacy and safety.
