Considering my lack of flying abilities I was thinking of getting prop guards.  Is there a brand I should be looking at or is there any reason not to get a set.

They are not a bad idea for beginners IMO.  With a little experience, most pilots will remove them.  

Prop guards are very good for giving a false sense of security.
They are good for catching the wind like sails and eating flight time and top speed.
And they are very good at getting in your field of view if shooting video.
A much more effective safety measure is to develop a strong fear of flying anywhere near trees, buildings, powerlines etc.
Flying close to obstacles is a major contributing factor in the majority of crashes.
As long as you are well away from obstacles it's hard to get into trouble.

Thank you for that post, now i am re-thinking my plans for getting the prop guard.

Fit plates instead to slow down cracking ... if you fit Guards - you cannot fit plates.

I've always been wary of guards on the P3 ... we have enough trouble with arms cracking round the motor mount screws - adding guards hanging of there ??

Just my opinion. Yes I have plates fitted.
