Can anyone answer whether the Phantom 3's battery can be recharged with the same 12V car lighter-powered battery charger as for the P2V+?I know that the batteries themselves are different but the real question is whether the charger itself is suitable for the new type of battery and whether the pins are spaced the same between the two platforms.

I believe the connector is completely different. My advice: buy a cheap DC car inverter on Amazon for $25, then you can charge *anything* up to 300W. Without the need for a ridiculously overpriced car charger.

Ditto with davidvogtphoto.  You'll get a lot more utility out of an inverter than the single-use overpriced car charger. (got my 200 watt inverter from Harbor Freight $21.99)

Is it ok to use any type of inverter with the charger? I know some laptop chargers won't work on the cheapest inverters. Those inverters with sine wave output are pretty expensive.

That's a tough one to answer. Personally, I'd use a pure sine wave inverter for anything that could be sensitive and given that the Phantom batteries contain quite a bit of electronics in them to regulate charging etc., I would be careful not to use a modified sine wave or anything else that is not producing a pure sine wave, in case I fried them.
I could be overly cautious here but better safe than sorry and even though pure sine wave inverters cost double the money of an ordinary one, they're still relatively cheap compared to the electronics you'll be plugging into them (laptops, phones, tablets, drone remotes etc.)

I was disappointed to find out today that my built in 115v power inverter in my car will not charge the p3A battery.  I am assuming it because the p3a charger is drawing more than 10amps, which would exceed the specs for the power inverter in the car. However is does say it can do devices that consume up to 150watts.  

For inverters it is always better to go more than needed to compensate for and efficiency loss along the way.

i dont think the fitting is the same, but i got an inverter 200W, not sine wave inverter, since i had this inverter already and have been using it fine, i reaaly dont know if it is a good idea or not!! i ll probably buy a 800w sine wave inverter so i can use the parrallel charger for 4 batteries that charges all four in one hour, cost around $500 + 300ish for a good sine inverter.

I have two modified sine wave inverters and neither will charge my P3 batteries.

Buy car invertor 30$ ap to 150vatt and that will be good

my 300w inverter will not charge my P3 battery. Inverter switches on then beeps and and the warning light comes on and thats about it.

My cheapie very small inverter works with my P3A charger just fine.  It is probably 25 years old.

SO what about those things on Amazon/ebay for around 15$  lighter charger, are they any good ?

why do u say it draws more than 10 amps. on the input AC side it draws  1.4amps at 110V and on the out put DC side it puts out 5.4 amps..

not sure why I said that, cause I just looked at the battery charger and on mine it says input 100-240v 1.8A and output 17.4V   3.3A .  Anyway, still not sure why it won't work in the car's built in converter. Sucks that it doesn't.  But I now have three batteries, so that helps!

1.4 amps at 120v =168 watts  with some loss from the DC to AC conversion  likely around 180 watts
The output of the charger is not in the calculation.
Take the 180 watts AC the INVERTER  needs to output from  DC 12v
180 watts divided by 12 =15 amps
P=EI     P(power)(watts) = E(voltage) times I(amps)

In actual use the vehicle battery can fluctuate. Full charge engine off would be 12.8volts, running commonly between 13.8 and 14.8.
So even at 14.8volts     180w divide by 14.8v = 12.16 amps
Still over 10 amps

Just entering the discussion here to find answers as to why we have problems charging DJI P3pro batteries in-car with our 300W DC-AC Power Inverter with an output of 230V-50Hz-300W. And no, its not pure sine wave. Any thoughts out there? Thanks!

The answer is that the DJI Power Supply is a switch-mode device and they hate square wave inverters. I bought one of the car charger sold on eBay for about $18 or so and while it takes just a liitle longer to charge, it works faultlessly.

even a 400wat charger wont charge my phantom 4 batteries in the car. just ordered a 300w sine wave inverter to try again with. the car plug takes about 2-3 times as long to charge as the p4 battery.

Why not just buy the DJI car battery charger and be done with?

it takes about an extra 30 minutes over the home charger per battery. I have the 3 battery charger working in the car now and it's working great.

I'd never use a third party charger with my DJI batteries - warranty is void on the spot!
