Hi all

Looks like we may be joining our friends over the pond next year! It looks like we will be asked to register our equipment and pass some safety awareness tests!

Whilst I’m not opposed in principle I’m not sure it solves the issue of irresponsibility or stupidity, or illegal operations for that matter. It might mean that the it puts a stop to people with cash purchasing  an expensive toy with no intention of learning how to use it properly and maybe the people who intend to cause problems, but there is a huge second hand market out there which will be available to all without registration.

Is there going to be V5 style registrion process for reselling them.

Geofencing is already in place for DJI and to unlock u need to request tso not an issue on the newer tech

Any drone that can be connected to the internet to collect updates could be backdated for geofencing but would require the user to register first to get updates but if you don’t want to update the you would be in restricted.

Any drone that doesn’t require or use GPS will be free of restrictions the same as other forms of RC aircraft and as these will be cheaper they will become they will become almost throwaway and be used as such with a callous attitude

Safety awareness training could be good but how often will it be required every drone purchase, once a year or like a normal pilots licence based on a number of hours?

Interested in people’s thoughts

Registration could be a good thing but not sure how it stops when the bad element anymore than now but add and additional layer to genuine users and undoubtedly an additional cost.

Of course, lots of thoughts but I doubt that will end much. The situation cannot continue without any sort of regulation, but then again too much regulation is also not good. Where on earth is the middle way?

The proposed UK regulations are pretty much the same as those introduced in Germany a couple of months ago. The "knowledge certificate” took 15 minutes on my iPad late at night on the internet and was a complete farce. I had to get out of bed to print the certificate and the card and wipe the tears of laughter off my face. The registration involves a fireproof plaque with owners name and address, actually an advantage, if the ac gets lost there is a better chance of it been returned. Using a DJI drone helps and provides most of the rest of the requirements.

Reality, well, I find it great when I am flying and some do-gooder comes up and asks me if I should be doing what I am doing. He gets the card, the certificate a copy of the insurance to read and the telephone number of the local police, to use at his own risk. When my neighbor sent round the police to my house for spying on him, I could prove that the flight I made was entirely on my own property. The film also proved that neither he nor his wife (both over 80) were being used as underpaid extras in any pornographic productions. However, at the end of the day the police did issue a warning, but not to me.

When automobiles were first made, the regulations required a man with a red flag to walk in front of the vehicle to warn people of its presence. Times change, and there is a lot more traffic regulation as well, but thank heavens the man with the flag has gone. So be it and so is life.

I do agree with regulation I have a PPLH and lots of different licences but I think that there needs to be more thought put in to first as I haven't yet seen any indication of how its going to be achieved, like you said I suspect that the test will be so simple you probably don't need to study! and there will be a fee involved somewhere. My only concerns is that the main purpose is to catch the bad guys who abuse the devices and laws set out for them, which we all know wont really happen as there will always be a way round it.

I had thought that perhaps the best way to do this would be someway of having a registry of drones and only these registered device would be able to use GPS (as this might put a few more people off as drones are only really easy to fly for the masses with the aid of GPS) this could also be backward compatible with older tech as it would only allow access to the GPS systems around the world if the device had been registered by issuing maybe a licence plate idea against the serial number of each drone.

When I get questioned I normally show them my pilots licence and then every time I do this suddenly they go from being anti drone to wanting to more about it!
