Just took delivery of my new Mavic Pro Platinum having returned the Alpine White to Apple for a full refund and sold my original Mavic Fly More back in September. I am really impressed with the Platinum. DJI advertise it as having new FOC ESC's and props to increase the flight time by up to three extra minutes and reduce motor noise by up to 60% + a sleek new paint job. They say that these are the only changes between the specs of the three Mavic's, well...

Having owned all three the start up sequence has a different DJI tone to the other two. The gimbal sensor calibration on start up is different. Having calibrated, updated, configured and set EVERYTHING this is the first Mavic I've owned without a single bug. The image quality seems less compressed in higher frame rates and resolutions. AND the tab on top the gimbal is red whereas the other two were yellow.

Am I therefore right in thinking that DJI have actually upgraded the Platinum more than they state? Not just quieter, more stable, longer flight and with a nice new paint job but the gimbal hardware and internals too? Even the core processors and IMU? I've never seen an IMU level at 0.000, until now...

It would be nice to know exactly how much the Platinum has truly been upgraded - new ESC's alone don't improve image quality.

that is interesting to hear. the IMU part could be anything, from better shielding to better calibration and such, my IMUs started out at zero on my standard mavic pro when i first bought it, since its had a few bangs, its ever so slightly above zero now..  as for better video feed.. i wonder if DJI has changed CODECs  for the plat version or all versions but plat takes better advantages of it (time to make theories).  HEVC would be a good change if supported but compatibility would be limited, most android devices would have a corrupted video feed or no feed since HEVC requires hardware and software support.  ios 11 added native HEVC playback to all ios 11 devices...sooo

that would explain why corrupted video feeds on .18 update for a lot of android devices.. including my moto G4.  if using wrong codec and no support for it on the device it would make a mess of it.   ios is in a lot better shape as well, again backs up the theory that maybe dji trying to transition to the better codec like a HEVC encoder..

Perhaps IOS 11 has something to do with it as I use an iPhone 7+ with my Mavic. The live feed quality to the phone looks sharper too. It does seem that they have done something to the hardware or may be in the FW - but I was on the latest FW on my Alpine last week and can see the difference.in image quality. The whole red vs. Yellow tab on the gimbal is a bit of a mystery at the moment... lots of speculation around it.
It would be nice if an official from DJI can explain but I guess that as the original Mavic is still for sale and the Alpine has the same specs they will need to maintain sales on those products. If they state that the Platinum actually has an upgraded codec to improve image quality the 2 month back order would turn into 6 months LOL.  

In any event, I can tell you now that the Platinum isn’t just dead to the ears at 250’ AGL but this thing has definitely been seriously upgraded - what or how remains the question.  

I would find it hard to believe that DJI wouldn't have mentioned upgrades to the Mavic if they had included them as further justification for a higher price.  But I do expect that they have leaned a lot since day one of production and that as time moves on the product improves, updates are introduced and so the product on the shelves now is superior to that which was sold on day one onward.

Just returned from my first two back-to-back flights with the platinum. Can’t hear it 200’ away - period - not a sound. 1080p at 60p is smooth. No horizon tilt issues. Refresh, tech enhancements, evolving product development - call it what you will - this drone has 100% been upgraded and not just the ESC’s. REALLY PLEASED with this DJI! It’s a keeper!

Glad your pleased, you went through a couple dozen Mavics.  I’ve enjoyed my MP since the first day with 0 issues.  It was produced in May.  I still think quality control is the main issue with DJI products.! Some are flawless, some are buggy from day one. It’s a flip of a coin on which you’ll receive.

The platinum is my FOURTH Mavic in one-month LOL. If anyone deserves a break I think I've earned it and finally looks like I got it!

i have a MPP (Manuf: Dec 2017) and mine has a yellow sticker ontop of the gimbal? What does this mean?

I think there are only manufacturing quality assurance stickers. Basically put on as part of the factory assembly process to show that the gimbal camera and motor have been tested and passed. I took mine off as the extended tab could potentially snag the gimbal head on the upper cover when putting the camera  into the max vertical elevation at +30 degrees (and if it was a bit windy).

Congrats on that!

I noticed the same thing with my refurb MP.
(different startup sequence).
Not sure about the IQ,  but my old MP had some soft spots that the new one does not have.

Just like how my iPhone SE is much smaller than my D610 + 4 primes.
You can't compare them 1:1 but they do fulfill a similar job from time to time

The red tab on the gimbal has changed even for Mavic Pro. Don't think the gimbal has changed, only the plastic tab. But I wouldn't be surprised if they made some small changes given the issues they had with the ribbon cable.
