6 Photo Modes Every Aerial Photographer Needs to Know

Ever wondered what other DJI photo settings you have besides the standard Single Shot? Many pilots, especially newbies, are not familiar with all the settings available to them. All DJI drone models support Single, Multiple, AEB and Timed shot, however, newer models like Mavic Pro and Spark have added Pano and HDR Shot.  This article will guide you on how to access and use the six DJI drone photo modes- Single, Multiple, AEB, HDR, Timed Shot and Pano.
To get to the photo modes in DJI GO 4 tap the Camera Setting button > Photo to access all the photo modes.

Single Shot
Single-shot as the default setting is the most common way to take pictures. In this mode, when you tap the shoot/record button you take a single image.

Multiple/Burst Shot

With a single tap of the shutter button, Multiple/Burst mode allows you to rapidly take several photos. It can be set to take 3, 5, or 7 shots, thus maximizing the chances of getting the photo you want, especially when trying to capture moving objects.

AEB (Auto Exposure Bracketing)

AEB mode will take multiple pictures of the same scene using different exposure values. You can set it to take 3 or 5 shots to get images with a high dynamic range. This mode is very useful when you are not sure about the correct exposure in tricky lighting situations or when you want to create an HDR photo. In this mode, you will need to combine the photos with photo editing software, we’ve made a quick easy tutorial to show you how:

1.  Cmd/Ctrl-click the images in Lightroom Classic CC to select them.

2. Select Photo > Photo Merge > HDR, or press Ctrl+H.

3. Preview the effects of the settings in the HDR Merge Preview dialog. You can select Auto Tone for an evenly-toned merged image, select Auto Align if the bracketed images have slight movement from shot to shot. Try different amounts of deghosting to fix any movement between frames.

4 Click Merge to create the HDR image.

HDR (High-Dynamic Range)

Similarly to AEB mode, HDR mode will take several bracketed photos to capture greater details of the composition’s elements. But unlike AEB mode, it will automatically pull the best parts of each frame and merge them together to produce the final high dynamic image. Thus, it’s a good option when you don’t want to manually merge photos.

Timed Shot

Tap the shutter button to automatically take images at the set intervals. End the sequence by tapping again. You can select 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 15, 20, 30, and 60 second intervals.  However, the minimum Timed Shot interval is 2s for JPEG images and 5s for RAW images. You can change photo formats in DJI GO 4 under Camera Settings. Timed Shot is an effective way to make time-lapse videos. You can check our time-lapsearticle to learn how to make your own.

Time-lapse made with Phantom 4 Pro Pano

Pano mode can help you easily get wide-angle image with low distortion.

As noticed in other threads for the P4 Pro it would be nice with better control of AEB, eg. adjustable f-stop range. Also a lot have missed the Pano mode.

Thanks DJI Grace for another tutorial. I have been using the new Mavic Pano modes and had great results.
Is there a way of saving the spherical interactive image which we see when connected to Mavic via our phone. The download gives the 360 flat image.

Hey there, I'm sorry for the inconvenience. Our engineers have been aware of this issue and they are working on this, please kindly wait for the update of DJI GO 4 patiently.

I prefer doing manual pano's, as the DJI pano mode only outputs as JPEG, not RAW/DNG.

As someone who is better at flying than photography (and I'm not even that good at flying. ha!) and based off the information in this tutorial, why would anyone ever use single shot when HDR seems the better option?

I second that motion.  Currently the brackets are only about 3/4 of a stop different.  We need to be able to set the interval, especially when shooting RAW which already has more range.  Also, I've noticed that when using AEB, the camera reverts to Aperture priority mode even though I have it set to shutter priority mode (to prevent motion blur).  The camera should always respect the users settings.

Thanks for Sharing. I always shoot in AEB allthough it would be nice to be able to manually change the F-stop between shot at times 0,7 just isnt enough.
