Hi, Crytek09, the native ISO for X5S is 500, please try to lower the ISO to see if the quality would be better. Thank you.

Hi.  Is The Native ISO in EI Mode on the X5s also 500?

Um...no it's not.
Technically, native ISO on the x5s is 100. All other ISO's are gained from there.  ISO 400 is offered as an optimized ISO, but from our testing, DR in EI mode is the same at all ISO's except 1600 which may have one more noisy half stop in the shadows. ISO 500 isn't possible in EI mode.

ISO 400 will give you approximately the same noise as the old 500. Cinecore 2.1 seems to make the X5s rather ISO invariant, meaning there is almost no penalty for pushing in post versus gaining in camera. They will both give you the same results. The key for low light photography is to use an ISO that produces a "light" result, and then "pull" the image down in post, this will give you a less noisy result. So when using ISO 800 at night, open up your aperture as much as possible, don't use ND, and possibly use a shutter speed that is slower than double the frame rate.  i.e. 30p normal shutter would be 1/60...maybe use 1/40 or 1/30. In camera, your result should look like it's somewhat overexposed (without clipping important highlights). You will see less noise in the picture this way, and then when you grade "down" the shadow noise should be crushed and will be less apparent.

Barry, do you have the X7?  If so, has DJi addressed their Magenta Manual White Balance tint in it yet?

OK Now I'm confused. Are DJI giving incorrect information about their own product ? (X5s EI native iso is 500)

Well in this case the info  wasn't correct. EI mode does not have an ISO 500 option. I have seen various DJI sources discuss "native" ISO as 400, 800, and 1600. Their use of "native" isn't correct. Optimal would be the correct word. The Native ISO is 100. If you asked me what "optimal ISO" is I'd tell you 100 or 200. So there...pretty much all the ISO's are optimal according to somebody. The reality is there is only one at work here 100...if you do a test, which you should, you will find that ISO 100 pushed to 800 in post looks exactly the same as 800 off the camera. so take your pick

The .0200 firmware which included Cinecore 2.1 had some distinct changes to white balance. Use Auto or Neutral to take a while balance reading of your scene, and then switch to custom to lock in that reading. That the most accurate method I've found and it usually will give a very neutral result.

Or set a custom reading of 4800-5200k depending on time of day. This gives a very neutral result.

The Sunny, or daylight preset has traditionally been set too high. (5800?) and has been the cause of red color balance for many people. I noticed in the current version of go4 that I got readings of 5300 (good) and 6000 (bad) depending on what mode I was in using the sunny preset. So I'm not sure I'd use it just yet. It seems that they have take some advice during the beta and lowered the sunny setting to a more "average" daylight level (an engineer told me it was set for noon time sun --still too high at 5800, but also not the time of day that most people shoot landscapes, 5200 would be Ideal in my opinion--an opinion shared by Canon).
