The DJI Battery Station: An Exclusive First Look

Battery-station-12-800x533.jpg

All experienced drone users would agree: your flying experience is only as good as the batteries you keep. We’ve seen so many stories that start with “I had this great shot,” and then end with “…but then my batteries died.” It’s become evident that if you want to make your flights worthwhile, you need batteries that are fully charged and built to last.
This is what brings us the all-new DJI Battery Station, a rugged, mobile, and supercharged multi-battery charging hub. It’s specifically built to charge up to eight TB50 Intelligent Batteries at once while being capable of charging four from 0-90% in just 35 minutes. We’ve never seen anything like it, but we’re pretty sure the Battery Station will become an essential gadget for serious professionals.
So, without further delay, let’s get to know the DJI Battery Station

Five Things the DJI Battery Station Does Really Well
1. Charges many and different kinds of batteries and devices at once
2. Charges batteries quickly
3. Discharges
4. Travels easily
5. Keeps everything cool

Five Things the DJI Battery Station Does Really Well1. Charges many and different kinds of batteries and devices at once

What it does

The Battery Station is a robust charging powerhouse, with dedicated slots that can charge up to eight TB50 Intelligent Batteries at once. These are the batteries that power the Inspire 2, Ronin 2, and Matrice 200. Two DC charging ports are compatible with the Inspire and Phantom series, Cendence remote controllers, and WCH2 Charging Hub, which charges WB37 Intelligent Batteries for Cendence and CrystalSky. To top it all off, two USB ports let you charge any mobile device.
Why it matters

Compatibility with a wide array of professional products means that the Battery Station offers an excellent all-in-one solution for battery charging.

2. Charges batteries quickly
What it does

The Battery Stationcharges TB50 Intelligent Batteries in one of three modes. Normal mode is a great overall method for ordinary charging. Silent mode charges more slowly, using less power and therefore requires a slower cooling fan speed, which is especially helpful if you have to charge on a quiet set.
For users in a big time crunch, Quick Mode is a super boost. It picks two pairs (the Battery Station divides the eight TB50 charging slots into four pairs) of batteries, and uses maximum power and cooling fan speed to charge batteries from 0-95% in just 35 minutes!

Why it matters
No matter how much we plan, battery emergencies are going to happen from time to time. Instead of wasting valuable time for a recharge, Quick Mode fixes it by getting your filming drone or gimbal back up in the air in just over half an hour.

3. Discharges

What it does
An onboard Option switch in the Battery Station lets you instantly choose between charging and two distinct discharging modes — 50% and 25%. Because the Battery Station uses the energy of the inserted batteries to power the cooling fan, you don’t need to plug into a power source when discharging.

Why it matters
Discharging is an important convenience that adds longevity and portability to batteries. When not in use, it’s not healthy for batteries to retain a full charge. Discharging to 50% improves the maintainability of the battery, keeping them in good working order for a more extended period. Since TB50 batteries aren’t cheap, this is a welcome feature.
So why the 25% option? Just ask anyone who’s ever put a power bank or lithium-based battery in their check-in luggage. For safety, airlines typically require batteries in check-in luggage to not exceed a 30% charge. This option ensures that you can bring all your cells to your next location shoot with no issues.

4. Travels easily

What it does
Speaking of luggage, the Battery Station looks like your typical roll-away suitcase, just maybe a bit sturdier. It has a telescopic handle and a pair of wheels for easy transportation. It also includes a pair of lock holes for extra security and a large handle for easy carrying. The case itself is made of a rugged plastic material and is rated at IP67 when closed, making it officially dustproof and waterproof.

Why it matters
The Battery Station was built to handle bumps, drops, and any other accident, keeping a case full of valuable batteries dry, clean, and in great shape. With security features to help keep all the contents safe, no matter where you’re going, the Battery Station is a worthy travel companion.

5. Keeps everything cool

What it does
Cooling fans and vents keep batteries and the Battery Station at optimal temperatures through any charging mode and environmental condition, monitoring battery temperature in real-time. If any overheating is detected, the Battery Station will automatically cancel charging and discharging.

Why it matters
Batteries — especially professional ones like the TB50 — pack a huge amount of energy. This is great for keeping the Inspire 2 in the air, but it also comes at a potential risk. Batteries can malfunction on their own or just get worn out after years of use. Unforeseen problems may occur, like the Battery Station case closing during charging. Real-time temperature monitoring is an important feature to make sure your batteries and operators are safe at all times.

Who is it for?

A few months ago, DJI came out with the Spark Portable Battery Station, which proved a hit for users who always needed full batteries while flying their favorite mini drone on the go. This portable charging station was geared towards everyday users and hobbyists.
The DJI Battery Station was built for professionals.

Film Crews

The abilities of the Battery Station mentioned above are the kinds of features that pros on film sets have been looking for, where charging eight batteries for their Inspire 2 and Ronin 2 is a real possibility, and at times, an urgent necessity.

Extensive Inspire 2, Ronin 2, and M200 Users

We already mentioned how the Battery Station is the perfect power-up for the Inspire 2 and Ronin 2, two DJI products you’ll likely see on a major film set. But let’s not forget that the TB50 Intelligent Battery also powers the Matrice 200, a professional drone that’s built to handle situations like search and rescue, structural inspection, and firefighting. These are all applications where keeping the drone in the air for hours is a must, so having plenty of fully-charged batteries would prove a massive benefit.

Traveling Professionals

Pros will find themselves moving from place to place at a moment’s notice, so every tool needs to be as portable as possible. The Battery Station was built to last, with a hard, flight-ready plastic that can take bumps and drops, while keeping its valuable contents secure and padded. If you’re on the run, it wheels away like any personal suitcase. And since Discharge Mode works without plugging in, you can drain every battery to aircraft compliance in a pinch, right there at the check-in counter in case you forgot.

Should You Get the DJI Battery Station?

Since the Battery Station was made primarily for the TB50 Intelligent Battery, you may want to pass unless you already own an Inspire 2, Ronin 2, or Matrice 200. But what if you do own one? Well, if you often find yourself running low on battery power, need to film all day, go on location, or all of the above, you should seriously consider this durable, travel-ready charging hub.
