Hi guys, hoping to get some feedback as I am still in need of editing software.

I have a high powered Dell laptop and I need something better than WMM, but not the very "top o the line". if you know what I mean.
I only had $200 budgeted for 1 yr licensing, but that number is flexible -

thx

Agreed,  Premier is a monthly subscription powerful editing suite... If you are looking for a buy and fly you may want to check out Sony Vegas.. It is much more intuitive... But Premier is definitely more pro line.

I'm a novice to video editing, never having progressed beyond windows movie maker. After watching Jim Hare's excellent tutorials but being too cheap to spend any money I've started playing with Blender (https://www.blender.org). It's free and capable and their are plenty of tutorials available online to guide you through the workflow.

Hey Bob, I would recommend that you take a peek at the type of Video card you have in your PC.  When you start to edit and render 4K video it is not always the power of the PC but the power of the video card.  My PC setup is an I7 with 32 gb ram, 1 TB SSD and a 2 gig ati video card.  I was having some issues with play back and rendering.

I purchased a Quardo 4000 because I am using Adobe premier.  Smooth as butter now!  I have attached a link for more info on the video cards.

thx ajgrahm and others.

@smcbrearty, not sure why you would say that, but thx I guess?
Of course I have a killer card, (I shopped for it). GT750m w/2g dedicated ddr 5
My Dell is laptop is a powerful/capable machine, a Beast of a laptop.
i7-4712hq
16g ddr4
500g SSD
17" quad display is amazing

I have been on this ride once before, 20yrs back.
I understand the time involved learning a new editing program, that's why I wanted some feed back from you guys first.
(even a free trial demands the same amount of time/learning curve).

I really think I should get Premier, but my 12 yo son tells me his friend gave him product key for Sony Vegas, (of course now that I ask him for it has not turned up yet).

thx ajgraham, I will click the link you provided for a look see as my mind is open to all suggestions.

thx again to smcbrearty, you are right the video card is key.

I appreciate you guys taking the time to give me your feedback, thx again

Premiere user here. Simple, yet professional. Has a decent learning curve.

Does Premier have a "full function" free trial, if so, for how long?

I'm a fan of Adobe Premiere, too. It's easy to get started with and has tremendous depth if you decide to become an "expert." Also, a quick google search will point you to great tutorials to do just about anything you can think of. I also use Magic Bullet Suite with Premiere for color correction/grading and special effects. Here's the link to the free trial for Premiere: https://creative.adobe.com/products/download/premiere

I do like to use Resolve to do color timing/grading/whatever you want to call it. There is a free version that suffices.
