DJI limits their max altitude to 500m. That doesn't mean the link above you can't find ways to hack it. But there is really no reason to need to go above the 400ft AGL in my opinion. Unless you are doing Search and Rescue. Which you wouldn't do with a Mavic anyways.

I could fly 1000 m up here and still be inside 400 ft AGL. 500 m is from take of point and has nothing to do with AGL.

Main Controller Settings > Set Max altitude > Most likely it's set to 120m stock but can be adjusted higher after agreeing to the warning about flying above 120m.  While it's possible to fly higher than this and in some cases there are loop holes, try to adhere to your local laws for drone flight in your area.
Edit: There are many great walk through videos on the in's and out's of the DJI Go 4 App on YouTube - breaking down all of the settings on the controller as well as features within the app.  I highly recommend perusing some of them to familiarize yourself.

Correct. it's 500m AGL is the max DJI will allow you to set.

Correct. Above Ground Level (AGL) and take off point are one in the same.

I agree with your drawing. I know AGL is always changing. But the Altitude of the drone is defined at the take-off point. So I can only go 200m above your hill from that take-off point But I'm still at 500m AGL on the drones altimeter.

Of course, the question remains, why do you need to?  If you get up into manned aircraft zones, you might be putting human lives at risk.  Probability of it happening:  small.  Consequences of it happening:  Huge.

You can set the Max Flight Altitude on the Main Controller Settings, the range is 20 to 500 meters, the default setting is 120 meters. If you need to fly beyond 120m, you need to agree on the agreement to the change the settings. And the max altitude enabled is 500 meters AGL, you are not able to exceed this limit. Hope it helps.

I like to fly in the mountains, not always possible to take off from the peak, so if You start from a valley and wont to film the peak You might need higher altitude above takeoff but maintaining AGL even below 120m ;)
Example
https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&video_id=vl_hekANIzM

But because Mavic cant measure AGL - DJI set a hard border of 500 m above takeoff

Normally you don't need to fly higher than 500m. But if you want to "climb" a hill with your drone (so you stay within the legal height) you can google it. There a some easy how to do and even videos with step by step instructions how to disable the limit.

Are you sure you are not mixing ATO and AGL. If Dji have changed how altitude is calculated it would be good to know about it. I have not seen that setting in Go 4. The only setting I have seen is Max altitude and is based on barometric pressure at ATO not AGL. What I would like to see in Go apps is ATO locked at 400 ft and then legal way to go higher thru the flysafe system same as Authorization Zones or Restricted Zones in Geo.

Man you really need to bring this down to slow motion for me....
ATO  and AGL are the same, at the take off point.
The max Altitude settingthat DJI include in the crapp is one that can be set to suit your individual preferences, or that of your local laws....
Without utilising this setting, then it is possible to fly to a DJI set firmware limit of 500 mtrs.
The OP has a legitimate reason, to fly above this constraint.....

It can fly up to 5000m above SEA level but the geo fenced max flight altitude above GROUND level is 500m - unless you hack it.

Here is an example of flying in steep terrain.  This ridge is the view outside of my house.  The water on the right is sea level.  The ridge on the left is 482m meters.  I took this photo from 18m above the ridge line.  I flew up this ridge line and never got more than 20 meters above the ground but couldn't go any further up the ridge because I hit the 500m ATO limit.  EVERYTHING around where I live is steep.

You can’t disable the max altitude of 500 meters on DJI drones without hacking it.
Yuneec drones for example go to 1000 meters on stock, Autel 800 meters.
And parrot only 150 meters

Fly safely

Hmm great thoughts.. but one size never fits all.. Nepal for example.. Really tall mountains over 28,000 feet.. 8 tallest in the world are all here and there are no flight paths, no laws, and it would be a pain to be restricted by say the US where their tallest mountains would be mere foothills here.

So in this figure, considering the take off I can maxed the altitude at 500 meters but when I fly through right the drone will take measurement from AGL? If my understanding is right, the system will then bring the drone to a max altitude (500m) of whatever is the difference from the AGL? Need your help please. Thanks in advance.

If you had to do a search and rescue and didn't use any drone with a camera on it while knowing it was in your possession I would personally have to high five you in the face and call you a retard even if it was a tello. You use any recourse to find a lost person

DJI please just offer a commercial waiver of responsibility of drone to the pilot once they produce a the paperwork from the country they reside. Maybey show your 107 cert in the US and get the complete unlock. You could save a money and free up some flysafe people to do something else like provide educational flight training and we would be saving time as well.. I tried to fly one video to the summit of a ski lift and couldn't make it with 500m max height. I could see the drone with proper lighting but she stopped about 200' shy of the lift.

There are times when the max alt is more restrictive than the law; for example, I hiked half way up a 2000 foot cliff but didn't know it was 2000 ft.  I had left my drone at the bottom and was going to fly it up to where we were for a shot - it was all line of site in the desert with no one else around.  At no point would it be more than 500 feet off of the ground, yet the 500  restriction was from where it took off!  So I couldn't fly it to me and had a hard time landing it from so far away.   I had to roll back my firmware, pick up a copy of DJI Assistant 2 that allowed the developer module, and then change the max height value.  There's google videos on it.  Still, they should make this so that it is 500 from the ground rather than from take off.

Correct. it's 500m AGL is the max DJI will allow you to set.

500m above ground level is lots, however this is not how DJI altitude works - which is from take off position.  Also it seems that the measurement is wrong on my Spark as there doesn't seem to be a barometric pressure sensor and it unreliably gains and loses altitude when flying straight over steep terrain (where it should stay level in the air).

I can't even fly my Spark very far behind my house as I live in the mountains and going about 300m east and climbing along with the terrain causes me to quickly get to the 500m false "altitude" limit.  This should ring some bells as far as being a problem when you can have hit the max altitude ceiling and yet easily run into the ground.

Something should be done to take into account actual altitude (pressure), or even better altitude above ground (combined with map terrain data).  The downward facing sensors could even reset the "height" if they see the ground, allowing you to be able to at least follow the terrain.
