So, do you try to figure the manual exposure settings before takeoff or do you launch and set them airborne eating up battery power? And does looking at a small mobile phone screen in sunlight really allow you to see what adjustments need to be made? I'm just trying to figure out the feasibility of setting manual adjustments. Or do you have favorite manual settings you always use (or start with) for certain lighting conditions that are tried and true that you know will work?
Yes, I typically set manual exposure before takeoff. It doesn't take long. I use the camera's meter (Camera Settings -> Exposure Settings -> meter is at the bottom) as a guide along with the histogram and what I'm seeing on my phone screen. The smartphone's screen can be deceiving, that's why turning on the histogram is important. Once you're in the air you can adjust as necessary. Setting a camera settings shortcut button helps get you there faster.
No real "tried and true" exposure settings. The camera's meter will give you a good starting point, the rest is up to you. Exposure can be used creatively too.
I think it is really about avoiding the constant fluctuations when relying on AE, which degrades the look of the footage. Experiment and have fun! :-) |
