This was a successful record breaking attempt, with that many dtones flying in the air in unison all at once.

Quite the feat... I loved every moment of it.

Besides these are flown by a computer program, not pilots and apps.

I would say so - "you remember those drones you saw before you went blind - it looks like that with lights on". Whereas if you were blind from birth I would have no idea how to describe it. May be let them touch the drone to visualise it in their own way, flash the lights and say imagine 1200 of these flying around. Being blind is one of my worst nightmares!

Another  way to do it would be to have the drones just fly up and form a dense cube then just have them change their lights. Then the bird could flap faster for example.
Bit like pixels on a monitor. Except in the sky. And mobile...

I'm sure that part of the show is just that. LED's changing colours to make movement, like what you describe. But these programs are far more complicated that that. Each drone is plotted on a graph.


I still wonder when and if DJI will ever show off their brilliance, with a fancy drone display like these...

It doesn't matter, because Duct Tape is your friend. Hahaha

I remember, years ago, when The Who played one of their most memorable concerts here.
Keith Moon, had the headphones taped to his head. He was a wild man on the drum kit...
Climbing on top of the kit several times. What a show man, watching the ultimate showman. Haha

Yeah, you can also fashion a hat to hold your goggles too... ;-)

The precision involved with this drone presentation, was astounding.

A local forum friend and I who fly together, tried Point Of interest with his drone hovering, while mine flew the circumference. That was hair raising enough...
1218 drones doing their daring show was spectacular and mind blowing.

I guess as long as the GPS or whatever positioning system they use is precise, OA is not needed.

Intel are one of the developers of OA systems, they were producing it for the Typhoon, so they may have their own system in use here. And most likely they would be using an RTK system with a local transmitter to achieve centimeter accuracy.

The drone show was truly amazing, but I am not holding my breath for DJI to attempt the same.

Yes, I agree about them probably not following the Intel lead.

Of course, it would be fantastic, to have firmware that was without fault. A great future goal. ;-)

I agree the act of 1218 AC all at once is utterly astounding ....

BUT sadly I am reading various reports that the whole Drone Show was limited and also pre-recorded due to weather conditions at time of actual Opening Ceremony. A major part of the show - to enact over the stadium was actually cancelled due to safety rules and weather.

I am also reading reports where media drones have been involved in 'incidents' ....

Prerecorded is possible, but it was shown live, on national tv over here in North America.
Cool looking drones too.
Either way, one heck of a demonstration in current drone tech.

I bet you could show them a thing or two, about  keeping those batteries healthy. Eh? ;-)

I'm still trying to find out what they mean by Pre-Recorded ... but what is interesting :

If you search out the full actual recording of the Opening Ceremony ... a lot of the 'Drone' display is NOT there ... particularly the 'over stadium' ...

It also turns out that Beijing Olympics - they pre-recorded their pyrotechincs .... so its not first time TV audiences around the world have been 'hoodwinked' ....
