Hi guys,
i'm loving my Mavic Air, but I have a problem with DNG files.
I can't open them, no matther what app/program i'm using.
I've tried with both my MacBook Pro (2017, fully updated) and my iMac (old, 2009, but fully updated too) and none of them can open any of the raw photos i'm getting with the Mavic Air.
I've purchased some additional apps and plugins just to be sure that the problem was not on my macs, and everything failed to recognize those files.

Does anyone gets the same problem?
I read about similar problems for some Mavic Pros, but never heard about it for the Mavic Air.

If anyone has suggestions, it wold be very apreciated.

Thanks!

What software have you tried?
Although my Mac will not open DNG's but Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Camera RAW opens them without any problem.
DNG is standard format independent of DJI so any software that is able to read DNGs should support those from Mavic Air.

Hi Pawel, thanks for the answer.

I've tried Quick View, Photo, iPhoto, Raw Power, etc etc
With other DNG files I've never had problems with these apps, the format DNG appears between supperted files in all of them.
So before buying Lightroom or Photoshop I'd like to be sure that the problem does not cam from the Drone.

In that case it can be problem with the Drone. As I said - DNG is universal, so If you have software that already reads DNGs it should read those from Mavic Air.
If you could put is in some cloud or so and post a link I can check that of course.

I'm trying with Adobe DNG Converter in this moment, and it even can't read those files.
It shows them "in grey" and they are not selectable at all.

Here you can find a photo, let me know if you can see it

Thanks again for your help!

Yep, everything is perfectly ok with this file. Opens on Adobe LR and ACR. In those it renders much better than with Safari.

here's someone other who's having a similar problem.
In his case he can open convert these files with Adobe Converter. I can't do that, so maybe even with Lightroom i should have the samep roblems..

https://mavicpilots.com/threads/ ... files-on-mac.33749/

I downloaded from a link in the thread linked a DNG photo, taken with a Mavic Pro. No problem opening it with my Mac.It's the Drone who probably writes something wrong in my files..

DJI DNG became incompatible with some versions of Mac OS until the release of High Sierra, maybe this is your problem? See the sordid details at MacOS Sierra 10.12.5 vs. DNG? [WORKAROUND].

Huh, downloaded the file to my High Sierra desktop and I'm having the same problem with Finder previews and when I try to open it in Preview with error message: Preview currently does not support this raw file format.

Loads fine in Lightroom, but LR is known to be more forgiving on DNG formatting. Don't have time to delve into this right now, but fwiw, here's the EXIF data for the file -- I think it's weird that the Compression value is defined as "uncompressed":

For what it's worth, that file opens fine in Capture One Pro (on Windows, but I don't think it matters).

Hear anything yet? Maybe it's as simple as the new Mavic Air camera just needs to be recognized and supported in Apple's RAW Camera support?

No, still no news from Dji in this matter.
Honestly I'm waiting for next  firmware update, then if does not work I'll contact Dji again.
It's not urgent for me, since it's not my dayjob, but you know... when you think you've got a beautiful photo and you can't open it to full resolution it's a bit frustrating

Just a little update.

I downloaded Photoshop. With Ps I can actually open and modify DNG / RAW files from my Mavic Air. No issues.
So... I still can't get it. If it's my Drone problem, or my Mac's probem (oh come on, I bought the MacBook Pro one month ago!), anyway I found a way to see those photos..

Just a little update.

I downloaded Photoshop. With Ps I can actually open and modify DNG / RAW files from my Mavic Air. No issues.

I have contacted DJI support without any results. They flatly refused to support Apple/Mac.

Apple Support was more helpful, they hinted on this article https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207972 stating they do not support RAW DNG files from DJI. BUT, they also agreed to raise engineering issue and follow-up on the problem. Maybe because I argued that they sell DJI on Apple Store, so they should support it . I will post more info this week.

I can confirm the problem is Mac/iOS related, Photoshop, Lightroom and other professional apps on both iPad and Mac interpret the files normally.

I think I have the solution to this problem. The DNG files that don't work with OSX are missing the UniqueCameraModel EXIF tag. Without that tag Apple applications and OSX will view the DNG files as unsupported. Whether that is Apple being overly picky or if that is DJI not complying with the proper DNG specs, I'm not sure. But the good news is it is easily fixed using ExifTool and the following command (You can download ExifTool here: https://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/):

exiftool -tagsfromfile @ '-UniqueCameraModel<Model' -if '$format eq "image/dng"' -if 'not $UniqueCameraModel' -r ~/Desktop/DroneBrokenDNGs

Replace the ~/Desktop/DroneBrokenDNGs with the path to the folder containing your DNG files or just one specific DNG file. That folder can contain other files as well, this command should only edit DNG files that are missing that UniqueCameraModel tag.

What the command does:
-tagsfromfile @ '-UniqueCameraModel<Model' = This copies the Model tag (which does exist in the DNG file) to the UniqueCameraModel tag.
-if '$format eq "image/dng"' = This tells ExifTool to only edit files that are of the DNG format
-if 'not $UniqueCameraModel' = This tells ExifTool to only edit files that are missing the UniqueCameraModel tag.
-r ~/Desktop/DroneBrokenDNGs = This tells ExifTool to scan the specified directory and all subdirectories (the -r option).
Note: This command will make a backup copy of the DNG files before editing them. This is safer but you can disable the backup by adding an -overwrite_original option to the command. You should only use that option if you have backups of the DNG files you are editing.

Hopefully in a future firmware DJI will add back in the UniqueCameraModel tag when it writes the DNG file. There is also some EXIF tags related to the lens that are missing, although those are not critical to read the DNGs it would be good to have them in there.

Let me know if you have any luck with this solution, hopefully it's universal enough to work for others. Now if I can just get DJI to add GPS tags to the MOV files....but that is for another thread.

Good find! Have you forwarded that the specific EXIF tag is missing to DJI support?

They can take a look here for the details of what should be in the tag - http://www.exiv2.org/tags.html

Exif.Image.UniqueCameraModel        Defines a unique, non-localized name for the camera model that created the image in the raw file. This name should include the manufacturer's name to avoid conflicts, and should not be localized, even if the camera name itself is localized for different markets (see LocalizedCameraModel). This string may be used by reader software to index into per-model preferences and replacement profiles.

Exif.Image.LocalizedCameraModel        Similar to the UniqueCameraModel field, except the name can be localized for different markets to match the localization of the camera name.

I hadn't noticed this, but yes it impacts me too. I hadn't tried to use Preview or Photos app to preview the DNG just yet, only opening them in Luminar - which of course reads them fine.

I've opened a support case with reference to this thread so hopefully DJI dev can add this tag for us in the next firmware.

But the good news is it is easily fixed using ExifTool and the following command (You can download ExifTool here: https://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/):

exiftool -tagsfromfile @ '-UniqueCameraModel

Thanks so much for this! I was going crazy thinking on what was I doing wrong. Photos now recognize the dng files from my Mavic Air. I hope DJI fixes this with a software update soon.

Make sure you open a support case so that DJI see it is an issue that needs to be fixed in firmware
