Ok, so it appears that I have the 2013 version with rear camera (Nexus). It has local wi fi with my home router but I think that's it.

Is this usable with P3 and if so are there any gotchas I should know about? I would prefer not to buy a new android device right now...but if it is "questionable" I'd rather do that than risk a Phantom.

It has GPS and a compass, so it is perfectly suited for flying the Phantom. It will be a little slower than some of the new tablet, but it still runs a quad-core 1.5GHz with 2GB RAM so it is not far behind. Because it's only WiFi, keep in mind that while on a network you should open the app (you will need to turn on USB debugging if it is not already ## go to settings > about device and tap "build number" a bunch of times to enable developer mode, then in dev options turn on USB debugging) and you will want to pull up the map of where you are going to fly. Switch to satellite view and zoom in as close as it will go and swipe around to get the whole area that you need in the best resolution possible. Turn off WiFi when out flying so that it doesn't disrupt the controller's 2.4GHz band, and you are good to go!

Hi Cacc, thanks for the reply. All useful info. I haven't done this before, so when you say "the app" do you just mean the GPS on Nexus or do you mean pilot app that comes with the Phantom? Sorry if the question is dumb (don't have a Phantom yet).

You want to do all that within the Pilot App. Just doing a zoom in or offline map from Google Maps does not allow you to access it from the app while offline; I made that assumption and was wrong. Even if you don't have your Phantom yet you can install the Pilot App and get yourself familiarized with it and get the maps all loaded in so that you are ready for when it does arrive.

I got a 2013 Asus Nexus today, and used it with my P3 Pro.  It worked fine.  You dont have internet for map data while flying but that didnt make any difference to me.  I have the Wifi only version as well.  I was using my Samsung Galaxy S5 phone that had 4G LTE.  That gave me internet but I don't use any of those features while flying really.

The pad updates itself to Android 5.0 then to 5.1 as you startup.

The Google Play store did offer me the DJI Pilot app and I was able to install the updated version from the DJI Download link.

The Galaxy S5 redraws the video faster when you switch from Video to Still or vice versa, but that was the only difference i noticed.  I didn't notice any lag or slow updates when flying.

Hi, you've just reached legend status....to me at least!! I've searched  everywhere including the user manual which gives no clue as to enabling the debugging feature. Thank you so much, if you were close by, I'd buy you a beer or two, and more!! Safe flying.

The Nexus 7 2013 version is noted for having a very bright screen with good contrast and high pixel density.  That's the whole reason I chose it, just for flying and its daylight visibility.

I bought recently and could have gotten anything more modern if I wanted but my research said it was the right call.  A sun shade is still VERY helpful though.

I will be getting a P3P on Wed, I have a Galaxy S5 but I am sure I will rather have something larger. I can get a Nexus 7 2nd Gen (2013) for C$150 or is it worth buying a Nexus 9 C$400? Or should I be looking at ipads?

One last question. Are you using Android 5.1.1, or a version of KitKat?

Hi Paul. I'm looking at the Nexus 7 - 2013. Now that it's been a year (to the day!) from your this post, would you purchase that tablet again? Is there an economical suggestion that you would purchase these days?

The Nexus 7 is still a great tablet with a very bright screen and it's just the right size.
