The 'Attitude Too Large - Backward / Forward Obstacle Sensing Disabled' message pops up very frequently.
I'm still surprised at the number of times I get asked how to fix this; there's nothing to fix, as it's actually helping the Air stay fast and true!

So, as I do, I made a short video explaining exactly what triggers it, what it means, and why you should be happy about it....

Cheers

Ian

Now how would this be any different to a high speed run in low winds?

The forward pitch would be the same angle in...

High winds with a low forward speed
Low winds with a high forward speed

Is the fact the in one of the above situations, the high winds message appears and in the other it does not, allow you to know if you have a high wind situation at height?

Hi pummy
Yep, that's spot on.  It's all about pitch, so whether you're flying fast in low winds or slow in high winds, eventually you'll reach a pitch point where the sensors become ineffective.
It's ground speed versus wind, or, put simply, the airspeed...

Hi Ian

The next logical question is then, how is the high wind warning message triggered?
Wonder what the criteria is for the craft to trigger that warning.
Is it a wind speed measurement, how much drift from a gps position and requires X amount of power to maintain this point?
That info would be gold to us flyers in high wind conditions

That would be good to figure out so we can decipher the warnings and take appropriate action

Good job in the explination.  I suspected that message was something to do with wind and pitch but you provided good details and design consideratios of the Air.  Thanks.

Hi again
The Air can calculate the approximate wind speed by analysing the variant between the expected GPS change (based on the remote's inputs), against the actual GPS coordinate change.
In th simplest scenario,  if there is no remote input (ie just hover), the Air will easily work out the wind speed based on how much effort is required to remain stationary.

Cheers

I find that simply turning off OA manually on my MPP combats the wind effectively without having to use Sport mode. I can also reach speeds of over 35MPH in p-mode doing that too.

Morning CW
Yes, absolutely.  After our discussions the other week, I did a load more testing and shot another video which I'm editing now, on how to reduce the risks and improve the performance of the Mavic Pro when flying in high wind...  That will be the conclusion of my high wind trio of films!

Cheers again!

Hi Ian

Guess the tips there would apply to any quadcopter or will you have Pro specific tips in the video?

Thanks for the explanation Ian, quick question, I rarely have a need for OA and VPS unless I am indoors which is almost never, by shutting OA and VPS off will the MP achieve a steeper angle of attack/pitch in GPS mode?

Hi again!
Yes indeed sir. Switching off the sensors on the Pro has a huge impact on the speed if you're not in Sports Mode.
Have a look at this vid, based on the Pro:
You can jump to 2:15 to get to the bit on the sensors on the Pro
