tell me more about color grading.

I see people posting "cinematic" footage, and everyone else goes nuts, but it just looks like this to me.

All I did was raise the black point so that black is gray, lower the white point so that white is also gray, reduce saturation, make it blurry, and then make it kind of green.

This is what I see in others' footage.

Help me learn!

hehe thanks.

I think it's so silly though to take footage from a camera that looks AMAZING and dumb it down to look "cinematic."

It's the same as when instagram filters first came out... we had been fighting terrible cameras on cell phones for YEARS and when they finally became amazing, we applied filters to make them look like they were terrible again!

I just think you show some good editing skills and techniques, and flying, which is all I thought of. I guess you are fed up of the people calling their shots cinematic, by adding black bars and LUT's?

Haha not fed up, just confused.  I don’t really get angry at the internet, but I do try to i understand it and stay relevant.

My style is vivid, sharp, and eye catching, while trying to tell a story.

I see people posting "cinematic" footage, and everyone else goes nuts, but it just looks like this to me.

it was sort of an ironic comment
don't take it personally please!
i asked once a photographer why color grading.. the only thing i kept from his answer was that everybody can take pictures. then you have to find a way to stand out from the crowd. that is when color grading comes into place.
i am not a big fan of that. an artist is an artist and he saw something when took a shot.
but back to your edit, it's nice, but i prefer contrast.
HD and 4K were invented to capture reality as it is. so yes, why color grading?

anyway, just commenting. i'll let the experienced guys here explain more if the case. it was just a personal opinion.

by the way, did you slow down your movie to 24.97 fps? that will make it look more cinematic
then, did you use some specific "cinematic" techniques? go backwards pan left..go backwards pan right..go forward and up..you know..all that good stuff ) rule of thirds..diagonals.. come on, you know what i am talking about

please don't feel offended. your video is very nice. and i think you were trying to put into motion pictures exactly this discussion

Oh I definitely do not take anything personally.  I made this video with my tongue firmly in my cheek.  I do not understand the appeal of "cinematic color grading" either.  Just figured I would try to get some more people to view my youtube channel.

I disagree with your friend's assertion that anyone can take pictures.  I mean, sure, anyone can take a picture, but the ability to capture something compelling begins with the shutter click.  The editing should only heighten what has already been created.  I think that's what you were saying as well.

My editing was limited to what you see:
1. lower contrast
2. make the blacks and whites more gray
3. change the aspect ratio by adding black squares on the top and bottom
4. desaturate and turn everything green

You can see each shot morph from a non-edited form to "cinematic."  I think it's better than the non-enhanced footage, but this is definitely not my preferred style.

I am definitely happy with the discussion in this thread though!  I despise the threads that only contain 2 word responses.

I say, "respond with substance or don't respond at all!"

hehe there are a couple of shots that I secretly like.

There is something about the snowy shot that lends itself to this type of editing.  it seems spooky somehow.

Yes, I like the OM a lot.
Not something I use everyday (but that was not my intention), but very nice tool to have and make certain shots.

yes, it's AMAZINGLY cheap for a name brand gimbal.

Also, I saw a refurb version 1 for $109, but the insane battery life of the 2 is very appealing.

I like the highway part the most. Is it timelapse or you just speed up the video? What tool do you use.

I am NO pro in video editing, but your video has rooms for improvement when it comes to color grading. But overall, it is a great video to showcase Spark!

Thanks!  The highway part is just normal video but sped up.  I use Final Cut Pro X.

Tell me more about what you think could be better in the color grading department.  I saw another post here of a very short video that everyone was over the moon about and it even got marked as DIGEST, so I just tried to match that.

Yes, that already makes a difference.
Now it does take some practice to be able to use the OM in a way I like it.
The normal 'walking' is not good enough. You really need to be ninja walking (keeping the up/down motion as little as possible)

The speed up effect makes the shot a lot cool!

As I said, I am no PRO with video editing. So I suggest you to search this on Youtube and watch his video. He gives a lot of advise for Spark cinematic footage, and I am following him before I even got a Spark:
