This houses carved into the rocks by the Phrygians, an ancient nation in western Turkey, to secure themselves from their enemies. I hope you enjoy it!

Aloha OOO,

Very nice.  Turkey is known for Earth Sheltering.  That is why I was somewhat surprised that so much of your video art shows a very hospitable environment with striking beauty and it was at first confusing to me.  Earth sheltering is often mentioned when there is extreme environment so until your work, I had thought of Turkey as having a lot of inhospitable land.

In my later years, I have read a lot about archaeology and Turkey has a lot of archaeology as you just demonstrated.  Those cave houses, when used, would have had a façade that made them blend in with the mountain and kept temperatures more stable year round.  A caravan or an army could have passed by and never noticed there were hundreds or thousands of people up on the mountain depending on the village.  In my mind though, it was still a nice way to survive easily in an inhospitable land until your work.

There is one historical event that I cannot recall the name but was brilliant.  An army tried to hunt down an urban group known to live in a certain mountain area.  Think Petra but without the architectural facades to attract attention.  There were supposed to be 10,000 people in the village, ripe for conquering.  The entire village was underground inside the mountain.

The conquering army could find nothing to conquer and ended up passing through because the access to the village was not noticeable.  But, archaeology later showed that the tunnel and meeting complexes and houses and apartments could easily handle a village of 10,000 people.  In other cases, armies could not burn the villages (rock) and with cliffs and tunnel entrances and passages designed for ambushing invaders, the villagers were very hard to conquer.  The villagers also always had the higher ground and lots of rocks for avalanches and specific drops.  Brilliant!  And it is so beautiful there.

Aloha and Drone On!

Thank you all for these kind words! Cetacean culturally and historically Turkey is a very rich country. You can find traces of multiple civilizations here. Some of them are considered as the oldest civilizations in the world. As you correctly stated above, the stories behind some of these places are even more interesting than the place itself. Have a great weekend!

Thanks ghutch! I've never thought about it that way Who knows, despite that maybe they had a happier life than today's people. Probably safety was the first priority at that times.

No, it is not forbidden. Just like every other part of the world we have some rules and regulations.

good stuff there. There are a couple of places that it may have paid to slow the clip down, the shots showing how the structures are sited, but doesn't detract in any way.

Wonder what happened to the spoil?

Recorded and uploaded at 4K@30 fps. Those segments are uploaded at recorded speed and no speed up in post. If it was recorded at 60 fps I would slow down it a bit.

Aloha wombat,

No spoil left.  Those houses are thousands of years old.  The facades have also decomposed or eroded.  During the life of the houses, the spoils were used to defend against invaders and bandits.
