Hey Folks!

So I finally bit the bullet on a Mavic Air after many, many years of 'window shopping' drones.

After some practice in a local field, I took it to Madeira for a few days to properly get to grips with it and make my first film.

Here it is - enjoy!

I learnt a lot with this brief tryout (including an embarassing crash) and can't wait to make many more films in the future.

Great Video for a first film, hope your drone was not damaged during the crash

My Air seems okay. I was so stupid and just incredibly lucky to even get it back. I couldn't hear the drone because of background noise, and was focusing on the shot too much to pay attention to where the drone was ... and it went in to this bush on the cliff face.

I was so stupidly dumb.

Lesson learnt!

Agreed very nice for your first vid. Nicely done some of the gimbal movements look a bit abrupt. But thats something you'll get the hang of as you go.

Beautiful footage.  I'm curious how you did the time-lapse panning (53 seconds and others).

Thanks everyone for the kind words.

The time lapses were done with my stills camera.

You can get all sorts of fancy equipment to move your camera bit by bit during the time lapse ... or just capture it with your camera remaining static and zoom/pan once on the timeline!

There's an awesome video on the forums now though showing what's possible using your drone and movement for time lapses. The post/thread is here: https://forum.dji.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=143488 .

Colour grading was done custom, shot to shot, in Premiere using their Lumetri panel.

I shot in Cinelike-D with fairly flat settings. I use 24fps as my timebase so either 4k24, or 2.7k60 where I then play it back at 40% to achieve smooth 24fps.

I don't yet have any PL/ND filters though they are on the wishlist!

I basically took this guy's suggestions in this awesome vid:

Thanks again!

I guess the good thing about editing is nobody sees your rubbish bits.

There are many, many, clips of me failing to get the timing right and just generally needing a lot more practice. What ended up in the cut was pretty much the best stuff balanced with what would hold attention for the two minutes.

Yes, coming from the photography world, I'm aware of the equipment you speak of.  I thought you were posting drone video though and I tend to not think of there being other sources within.

Thanks.

That's quite typical. I'd say you'll generally get about 5 minutes of great footage out of 20 minutes of recording.

They say 90% of clips land on the floor.
