Aloha Cetacean,
yes, it is quite impressive. Another place is the mining district of Argentiera, up north in the province of Sassari. Closed now, it was mined for iron, zinc and lead (the Romans took quite all the silver that was there - Argento means Silver ). Also, to be sent to work in Sardinian mines - and also to Elba island- was one of the direst punishments in ancient Rome... and the sentence was "damnati ad metalla", which means "sentenced to the metals (the mines)".
Aloha Antonio,
Yes, that is why the Element abbreviation for Silver is Ag. (I had three years of Latin, but barely passed the last year.) Life was rough back in the days of Rome. Mahalo for the information!
Argentiera, Sassari is in Spain? Do you know if Argentina is name because of Silver? I know they were always looking for Gold! I am sure Napoleon did not work the mines on Elba but he did work his way out, at least once! Or was that another location and he just ended up on Elba?
Aloha and Drone On! |
