I plug the phone into the controller turn on the controller and litchi and then the drone.
Controller links up with the drone but the litchi app will not connect in big red letters not connected on the top of the screen.
The same way I connect the DJI go4 app.

Make sure all apps running in the background are turned off, if it doesn’t connect I recommend deleting Litchi app and reinstalling, I have tried it but using iOS and it connects without any problems.

Especially ensure DJI GO 4 app is not running in the background.  That for sure could cause the issue.

Is it like the MP where you can connect the RC to your phone two ways?  If using the bottom port the side one needs to be disconnected?  I take it that it worked using the DJI GO 4 app?

From what I have read, Litchi (paid version) is not compatible with the Air, only the bata version is working with the Air.

Try going into settings, applications, DJI GO 4  scroll down to set as default. Mine reads "None set as default"

Next time you connect the controller.   Turn on controller wait for connection then plug into android. You should then be given a choice of DGI GO 4 or Litchi.

Hope this works for you.

and still I get a red disconnect.
I am using the LG G6 Phone it has always worked for me.
I also did a complete uninstall of Litchi and reinstall this time.
Still no connection.

Sorry, I don't know the answer to your connection problem but I just wanted to say I bought the Android Litchi app yesterday and same as you when I plugged in the controller had a choice of either Litchi or DJI Go4, but when I selected Litchi it all worked fine.  This was on Samsung S8.

It took me awhile to get it to connect but it does. If you're using an android device make sure you go into your app and force stop the DJI go app. Turn on your Mavic Air wait till it beeps, turn on you RC wait till it connects with the aircraft, then plug in your android phone, and it should give you a choice if you want to connect by usb to Litchi. Just confirm and you're done.

I know probably a stupid question but you are unplugging the side port of the RC when using the bottom USB port right?

Too bad follow mode not supported on IOS only android.  Wanted to try Litchi magic leash but no can do on apple.    I emailed Litchi when it would be supported on apple and the typical answer on a future release.

I know you've sorted by going to iOS, but I tried Litchi (Galaxy S8) with both side and bottom ports last night and they both worked.

However when I tried with DJI Go4 running in background Litchi had the red no connection message.

Do you think something else could be causing it.
When you uninstall an app does it remove everything or does it leave something in the background.

It's a mystery.

Do you have a 2nd device (wife/partner etc) you could install just Litchi onto and try?

You need to have Go 4 "installed" but not running.  Litchi uses resources from DJI and you might need it to update firmware on AC and RC.  There are some exceptions to this which are listed on the Litchi website:   https://flylitchi.com/help
I STRONGLY suggest you spend some time on the Help section of the website.  You'll see some of the complications with using the Android based hardware.  Way more confusing, apparently because of the wide range of hardware/software combinations.

From the Litchi manual  (as of April 25, 2018 ) ... RE-check your steps.
Connecting Litchi to your drone  (from:  https://flylitchi.com/help)

First, ensure you are using the latest DJI firmwares on both your aircraft and remote controller if you are using one. You can update the firmware using DJI Go, or for some of the older aircraft models download them from dji.com. Then, depending on your platform, follow the steps below.
Android

For remote controllers with a USB connection (Mavic Air/Pro, Phantom 3 Advanced/Professional, Phantom 4 Standard/Advanced/Pro, Inspire 1, Inspire 2), follow these steps:

-Make sure no DJI-based apps (including DJI Go, Litchi and other third party DJI drone/osmo apps) are running in the background. If there are any, force kill them
-If you have another app (such as DJI Go) set as the default for the remote controller USB connection, you will need to clear the defaults for that app in your mobile device (Settings - Apps - DJI Go (or other app name) - Clear Defaults). Please note that with Android 6+, some devices automatically set the app you start as default, so this step needs to be done everytime you want to switch app (for example from DJI Go to Litchi and vice versa)
-Start your aircraft and remote controller, and let them initialize for a few seconds
-Plug the remote controller into the mobile device
-You will see a popup asking which app to start, select Litchi in the popup to initiate connection
Info:  Make sure to watch this video tutorial.   (video available at:   https://flylitchi.com/help)
EXCEPTION to the matter of having Go 4 along side Litchi:  Known issue For Samsung Galaxy S5, Xiaomi Mi5 and LG G4 devices running Android 6+, connecting to Litchi with any aircraft model except the P3Standard/P34K/Spark will only work if Litchi is the only DJI-based app installed on the device (DJI Go, or other third party DJI apps must not be installed on the same device).

-For drones with a Wi-Fi connection (Phantom 3 Standard, Phantom 3 4K, Spark), follow these steps:
-Make sure no DJI-based apps (including DJI Go, Litchi and other third party DJI drone/osmo apps) are running in the background. If there are any, force kill them
-Force close all DJI-based apps (including DJI Go and other third party DJI drone/osmo apps). Please note step 1 is not enough. To force close an app, go to your mobile device Settings - Apps - DJI Go (or other app name) - Force close
-Start your aircraft and remote controller if you are using one, and let them initialize for a few seconds
-Connect to the Wi-Fi network of the aircraft
-Start Litchi

iOS
Make sure no DJI-based apps (including DJI Go, Litchi and other third party DJI drone/osmo apps) are running in the background. If there are any, force kill them
Start your aircraft and remote controller if you are using one, and let them initialize for a few seconds
If you have a Wi-Fi based drone (P3 Standard/P3 4K/Spark): connect to the Wi-Fi network of the aircraft, if you have a USB-based remote controller, plug the remote controller into the mobile device
Start Litchi
