Ok, so I’m new to the Mavic Air and drones in general.  Took my Mavic Air on vacation with me to Florida.
Today, I took it out and wanted to try the special flight modes.  But I’m having a heck of a time seeing the screen of my iPhone in the bright mid day sun.  I have the screen brightness cranked all the way up, but the screen looks almost completely black when I’ve got bright sand beach around me.  Am I the only one with this problem?

I see all these online videos and of course the screen is crystal clear.  When I get out ing an open space, I can’t see a damn thing.

Try turn off your auto brightness setting - see if that helps. (sorry just making a guess) -

I agree 100% with this. My galaxy s8 plus gets the light sensor covered when in the controller and thinks its dark out. I don't use it any more though. Using the IPad mini 4.

it is something i noticed when trying various phones but i never got round to understanding what caused it (sensor being blocked by rc handles) - so thats pretty cool to know  - thanks for that.

Purchase a sun hood for your phone/device

Any particular brand?  Does the sun hood attach to the phone or the remote?

I found that Phone screens even with a sun hood was not bright enough to see .
My friend just purchased an iPhone 8plus and has a hard time seeing the screen and has gone back to his iPad.
I have the iPad mini 4 and it works perfect for size of screen and brightness.

A sunshade is recommended. You can also consider the CrystalSky.

Pretty much the norm unless you have something akin to CrystalSky Ultra-brite.  But then you may have other problems.

Several people have suggested DJI's Goggles or even Epson's  Moverio BT-300FPV Smart Glasses (FPV/Drone Edition).
The Moverio will need sunglass lens infront of them for bright days.
Read where people have complained of Goggles being sweaty hot to wear for long periods.

maybe also you can check your camera filter settings. During one flight my friend could barely see his screen - i noticed that his camera was not set onto vivid or true color or cinelik etc - his was set to 'none' - i changed his setting to one of the filters and immediately the screen visibility improved to be as good (in fact even better) than my picture (which was good enough for me)

Thank to all for the suggestions.  I think I’ll go with the hood.  CrystalSky is $400 and I’ve already invested enough!  I’ll also try one of the filter settings.  I use a ND16 polarizer which I think help.

I've made my own hoods, they work great for me in bright sunlight. Advantage only costs two bucks.Near the end of the thread is are pics of a hood for a mini iPad too.

I turn the brightness all the way up, turn the sensor off for the auto adjustment and then I stand under a shade tree.  (Yes, hard to do on a beach... LOL)  Still occasionally have problems though.

You didn't wear by accident  polarized sunglasses? This can turn your screen almost black.

As a matter of fact I did wear polarizing sunglasses.  I’ll try my regular glasses next time I’m out.

You can also try it indoors. Put your polarizing sunglasses on and watch your phone or tablet. Rotate your glasses and see how your screen darkens/brightens. Thats how polarizers work.
Good luck
