I'm contimplating purchasing a new tablet for my Mavic Pro as a back up in the event my Invidia Shield goes down.  I have no use for cellular capability.  What are the benefits of having a tablet with GPS rather than just WiFi alone?

Thank you,
Chuck

When using a mobile device with a GPS receiver, you can do the following:

  • Use the Follow Me flight mode
  • Reset the home point to your current location at anytime

Hi there, pls clarify the differences you pointed out.
I have a Wi-Fi only iPad mini and in Active Track mode,  the Air follows me.
The home point can be set to the take off site or where the controller is via DJI GO app.
What am I missing?

I use the Garmin Glo unit when and if you feel you need the GPS.

Me too. You can use it as a GPS booster for cellular phones /tablets that have poor GPS as well. I use the GLO with my Ipad mini 4 and Ipad 6th generation. Both are only WiFi and only used for the Go  Apps and Litchi.

I think the simplest way for me to explain is I'd rather have a tablet with GPS than without it. Not that it's going to save your drone from flying somewhere and landing lost, but it's better to have the possibility of utilizing a tablet's GPS for location services as another means for a potential recovery option. Not having GPS means the accuracy and dependency of the device locating your drone is less than a comparable GPS enabled device, but at the end of the day I don't really think having a GPS enabled tablet will recover any better a drone that has flown away and landed somewhere lost, better technology not better tablet usually does the trick.

This from DJI. Transcript of chat.

If a phone or tablet does not have GPS fitted, does it have any effect on the use with a drone?
Yes, since the GPS on the app will be needed for the safety of the drone.
So make sure a device on the recommended list of DJI
Thank you.

When using a mobile device with a GPS receiver, you can do the following:

"Automatically reset the home point to the Mavic's current position while flying with ActiveTrack (commonly called "dynamic home point")"

Would that data not come from the aircrafts GPS/GLONASS rather than the device used on RC ?

The home point can be set to the take off site or where the controller is via DJI GO app.

If using a mobile device that does not contain a GPS receiver (and is not attached to an external GPS receiver), you will never be able to set the home point to your current location (unless the Mavic is right beside you).

That should have read to "your current location" (not the Mavic's current location). The idea is to have the home point follow you since you're moving.

I would disagree, you (with RC) do not have to be the subject it is tracking.

The dynamic home point is the position of the aircraft itself, not the controller. It will automatically reset to the current position of the aircraft when the aircraft has moved more than 15m from previously recorded home point.

Page 19 of the Mavic Pro manual gives detail.

And DJI Go 4 states:-

I am wondering the same thing.
Hope DJI will give a statement on this.

You're right. It definitely resets the home point to the Mavic's location. Here's an example showing that feature in action:
