Infrared sensors have a lot of latency, hence the lift ascends so quickly that the drone doesn't have time to react. Plus, if you go out now and test fly your Tello, then ascend your hand up towards the bottom of it, you'll find that the Tello does nothing because the IR sensors aren't used for 'obstacle avoidance', only to detect a hand during palm landing.
This is NOT what happens with my Tello

My Tello definitely will fly upwards away from a hand, but it is not entirely consistent. I suspect the times when it doesn't do that are probably due to low light or some other effect reducing the ability of the Tello to see what is below.
Putting a hand under the Tello (with prop guards on, flying inside) can cause it to fly up to the ceiling and stick itself there with the suction from the propellors. |
