I invite you on a journey with a lot of useful tips and breathtaking scenery captured with my Phantom 4 Pro. Different from my latest guide https://forum.dji.com/thread-151751-1-1.html where I talked about capturing moments that arise instantly without any planning. As you all may know a planned trip needs some preparations.
The Transfăgărășan road in Romania DN7C is a paved mountain road crossing the southern section of the Carpathian Mountains of Romania. It's the second-highest paved road in the country. This epic road was built in the early 1970s which connects Trasnylvania with Wallachia, back in the day it served military purposes. The road reaches an altitude of 2.042meters, charactarised by hairpin turns and S-curves.
Transfăgărășan road has been featured in "Top Gear" TV Show and has been proclaimed as the "The best road in the world" by Jeremy Clarkson. Previously this title has been given for Stelvio Pass in Italy.
TIP: When going to the mountains first of all you need a proper equipment! Yepp I’m talking first of all about clothing. Weather conditions can change pretty fast so be sure to carry with you a lightweight raincoat and wear boots for tracking! I strongly recommend to purchase a lightweight carrying bag for your drone. For Mavic series,Spark, you’ll find in DJI shop shoulder bags & for the Phantom series owning a backpack is a must! Carrying your drone in your hand is impossible and unconfortable during hiking.
Choosing your location: You have two options!
First: You pick a place that you haven’t heard about (found on the web or heard from an acquintance) and haven’t been there. Well this is the most fun and exciting from my opinion since you will discover the place for the first time. After collecting information about where to go and how to get there you need check it out on Google maps to have a vague idea to make a preliminary plan. I recommend setting some imaginery points from where you would like to take your pictures.
Second: Been there and you can recall your memories, it's easier since maybe you have seen something you considered interesting and said " That would look cool through the eyes of my drone". Even if you have been at the location I'm 100% sure that you'll find a hidden treasure like i did. After take-off look around for interesting spots/scenery.
TIP: If you pick a highly visited location like I did, try to create something different. Try angles that haven't been photographed by others. Search on aerial platforms for example www.skypixel.com to see pictures from fellow dronists.
"Hidden Gem" - a hidden lake in the crest of the Hill - Didn't know about this hidden lake at the top of the mountain!
During my trips, distance of travel varies from 60km to 500+ kilometers. Before arriving to your destination, during the trip you may see things worth photographing. That's why I recommend owning as much batteries your wallet can afford. The minimum batteries I own for each of my drones is 2. Have your charging cable in your bag all the time.
Tip: Purchasing a car charger may save you! If you run out of battery take a break find a restaurant relax and ask for letting you charge up a battery.
After getting to the top you'll find Balea Lake, no further words here I'll let you enjoy the view.
For my surprise photographing behind the spines of the mountain holds a lot of secrets. Don't hesitate getting to the "other side" of the mountain crest. Either by climbing up or just by flying up with your drone.
TIP: Wait for strong GPS connectivity before take-off. At great heights you need to take into consideration the wind speed! You can loose youre drone pretty fast if you fly in high winds.
Keep an eye on your drone all the time! If you see predator birds in the area that show interest towards your drone land as soon as possible. Some species might be defending their nest and may attack in order to defend it.
Capture something nobody has seen before...
I also shot several photos and stitched them to obtain a high megapixel count final photo. From my opinion it turned out EPIC!
Summary of Tips:
- having proper equipment necesarry for hiking (clothing, water, snack, drone carrying bag) - obtaining flight permits (depending on your countries regulations) - create something new, don't be a "copycat" (only if you do it better) search for existing pictures taken at the same location - make a preliminary plan ( choose the spots on Google Maps from where you'll take off etc - have your charger at you, owning a car charger is even better - keep an eye on your drone permanently, beware of predator birds. - wait for strong GPS signal, do not recommand flying in ATTI mode, just for Experts. - Always shoot in Raw and shoot photos in manual settings to get the best results
Hope you enjoyed viewing my work as much as I did creating it! Which photo do you like the most? Feel free to ask questions! ;)
